More about the restaurant: Boronia House

Historic, heritage-listed Boronia House has stood proud on Military Road since 1885. A fine example of Sydney’s Victorian architecture, the building was first a private residence, then the Mosman Council library, and now, thankfully, it is open to the public as a restaurant and function centre. The focus here is on refined high teas in the British tradition, served seven days a week, and on lavish private functions and dining events. There are various rooms available for private hire, with the option of full venue hire for big, bold weddings and receptions. Dress code: dressy.

Thinking about making a Boronia House booking?

With the arrival of the Australian spring, Boronia House really blossoms – and we’re not just talking the verdant grounds that surround this historic former residence along Mosman’s Military Road. The interior of the House is a warren of luxuriously appointed rooms capable of accommodating parties of all sizes. However, there’s nothing better than sitting down on Boronia House’s wraparound verandah, complete with Victorian ironwork filigree, for a high tea on a sunny Sydney afternoon. Complete with a glass of sparkling Australian white wine, executive chef Emmanuel Herrera and pastry chef Tim Egan have awed thousands of guests with their creations.

Stepping up to Boronia House’s front door is like stepping into another time, a time when Britain, the Commonwealth and Australia were much more closely linked in the national psyche. The proprietors of one of Sydney’s most sought after function venues like to encourage their guests to dress up for a visit, whether the occasion is one of the restaurant’s popular British-style high teas or you’re a guest at a private party. Boronia House’s advice regarding the dress code is not intended to ratify some stereotypical Mosman, Sydney snobbery – not at all, my dears. It’s simply to reinforce the pleasure of that most Victorian of pastimes, taking high tea in the grounds of a stately home. Dressing up befits the ceremony. Here, guests who play along are treated to delights like mini creme brulee, English trifle, orange cakes and a passion fruit marshmallow domes. Special occasions like the Queen’s Birthday puts the kitchen and scullery into overdrive as they whip up lashings of classic Pimms cocktails to accompany the long weekend spread.
