Located in a listed building above a Victorian train tunnel on Knaresborough’s High Street, Carriages is a restaurant and wine bar serving supreme British and European cuisine (plus a selection of pan-Asian bites) alongside a peerless selection of fine wine and ales, best enjoyed in the beer garden. Drawing regular patrons from Harrogate and across North Yorkshire, dining (or simply enjoying a drink) at Carriages promises to be an intimate, cosy affair.
Carriages is well-known among Knaresborough locals for its great range of wine and beer. The beer garden itself attracts a horde of hopheads to Carriage’s High Street premises on summery days, but no matter the weather, dining in the restaurant’s cosy interior is a treat not to be missed. Carriages’ commitment to sourcing local produce has led this modern British and European restaurant to forge strong links with suppliers like the Yorkshire Dales Meat Company and Ramus Seafood Emporium, resulting in seasonal menus that have Harrogate and Yorkshire’s foodies lining up for a booking.
It’s not all British classics and European gourmet dishes on the menu, though. Carriages also like to introduce a little fusion to proceedings with its range of pan-Asian dishes. A popular feature on the menu is the list of Spanish tapas, small plates that the culinarily-inclined know are the perfect accompaniment to a carefully chosen wine or sherry. Highlights include the grilled asparagus with shaved Manchego cheese, charred squid with black rice and bagna cauda, and the confit duck with poached pears and almonds. A landmark in beautiful Knaresborough, it’s not only locals to the Harrogate region knocking on the door – be sure to book in advance for a great meal at this intimate restaurant.
We decided to order from the tapas menu, and got a number of dishes between the four of us. The food was really very good, and the service was also brilliant as expected.
Lovely Sunday lunch, the food was cooked to perfection, the staff very pleasant and helpful as always and a relaxing atmosphere. Well done to all at Carriages.
The service was brilliant and there was a wonderful atmosphere about the place. The food was amazing and the menu was inventive and homely at the same time. The only poor comment is that the poor singing pianist wasn't the most talented of chaps but it did make us laugh.
We enjoyed great food & service, would thoroughly recommend a visit if you're in town for the evening. The building has bags of character too.
Having been dining at Carriages and enjoying tapas for many years, we were a little disappointed with the selection available this time. The ham hock croquets were huge, as were the beef patties - just too much when sharing with company. Where were the much loved meatballs? For the very first time we had to send a dish back as it was cold and dry. Some other dishes could also have been served much hotter. The food was good quality but somehow the meal lacked it's usual finess. However, as always, the staff were most welcoming and so very helpful.
Excellent early bird Valentines Day meal; great atmosphere, food, wine and service. We live in Kirkstall and it was very easy for us to hop on a train, get off at Knaresborough, enjoy a pre-dinner drink at The Mitre and stroll up to Carriages. We shall be doing it again!
We had a lovely experience at your restaurant, the service was good. A couple of things with the food, we had dauphinoise potatoes which were not great, i.e. too much butter, which had melted in the dish and therefore much too greasy, we could not eat them and the Brussels sprouts were too hard, I could not even cut into them. Our coffee was delivered without milk and we had to ask for it, the coffee was cold by then. Otherwise a lovely restaurant with great atmosphere.
Another fab meal at Carriages. Brilliant friendly service, delicious food, great atmosphere and amazing value! Always our restaurant of choice when in Knaresborough. Looking forward to our next visit.
Really enjoyed the food it was really good. We both had Duck Leg Confit and it was well cooked and very tasty. The service was a bit disorganised but not a big problem. The main problem were the tables in the part of the restaurant we were in there were only 3 occupied tables 2 couples and a group of 8 the group of 8 sat behind my wife and because the tables were so close she was constantly being knocked by them.
We had lovely dinner perhaps a little expensive for the style of restaurant, however it was busy so they seem to have enough customers using the restaurant. We have been a number of times over the years, but the food was much better than a few years ago.so we will return. The service from the team was excellent and friendly and a nice atmosphere in the place, well done.
