Close to Clapham Junction station in London’s Battersea, Donna Margherita has been serving up a dazzling array of authentic Neapolitan dishes for over ten years. This Italian restaurant on Lavender Hill is home to a traditional wood-fired stone oven, turning out some of the best-loved pizzas south of the river, made with ingredients imported directly from Italy. Of course, superlative Neapolitan pizza doesn’t exhaust the possibilities here: there’s a classically-structured Italian menu to work your way through, curated with as much care and love as the pizza.

More about Donna Margherita, London

It’s June 11, 1889. Pizzaiolo Raffeele Esposito of Naples is to bake the ‘royal pizza’ in honour of visiting King Umberto I and Queen Margharita of Savoy. Esposito goes with strong visuals: Green basil, white mozzarella, and red tomatoes on his pizza symbolize the Italian flag, the pizza goes on to be known as pizza margherita – and is one of the many reasons we cannot contain our joy when visiting Donna Margherita on Lavender Hill in Clapham. For over ten years, the restaurant has delivered the very best in traditional Napoli-style Italian food, very much in the tradition of Esposito.

Using only the freshest ingredients and having them imported from the South of Italy, Donna Margherita stands for a culinary experience like no other. Wood-fired oven, centuries-old recipes, and a very kind and friendly service make Donna Margherita a great place to enjoy some of Napoli’s finest in South London.

Great atmosphere, very friendly staff and more importantly great food. We were part of a group of four all of whom had a very enjoyable evening along with excellent food and service. Our first visit here and we have booked again for a couple of days ahead.

This restaurant had delicious food and lovely atmosphere. The staff were lovely and the speed of service was great. Burrata particularly was tasty, as was the pasta

What to say about Donna Margherita... I've lived around the corner for almost a year and always noticed how it seemed to have a good steady trade regardless of the day of the week. I never tried it myself until last week and now I know why it's always busy - Food was delicious, service was good & the Puglian red wine suggested by our server was delightful and relatively reasonably priced- Top marks all round!

I'm very picky when it comes to rate italian restaurant, even more if it's a typic southern one (which is where I come from). The waiters and all the stuff is very welcoming and I felt at home (yes, like I'm in southern Italy!). The food was more than perfect, I can definitely say that is was the best pizza I've eaten in london so far. The dessert was wonderful, I've got a very nice pastiera, and it was tasting so fresh and genuine like I was in Naples. They've got an amazing selection of wine coming from almost all regions, I've got a very good Salice Salentino to drink, they served it perfectly, letting me taste it first and then serving. If I can say, everyone that want experience a pure and genuine italian experience, should try it!

A super-authentic Napolitan (and I mean Napolitan, not Italian!) restaurant and good value. Very attentive waiting staff - maybe a bit to keen to get our orders much of the time. A couple had poor English but my Italian friend sorted that problem. Very interesting range on menu although not always easy to decipher the Google-translate versions of the Italian dialect writing! Excellent ingredients, tasty meals and quick service. Tiramisu a bit dry and not enough Amaretto for my personal taste, mushroom pasta very tasty indeed, my slided meat/cheese selection started was huge. Not many wines by the glass but what there was, was excellent. Felt very authentic sitting in the canopied trattoria section and they had heaters too. Interior decor was a bit stark and all very open and cafeteria-like. The restaurant is a good 10 minute walk from any rail/tube stations but it is worth the effort for a true taste of southern Italy.

My parents were visiting from Italy and I thought that Donna Margherita could be the right place for them. Actually, they loved the place, rigorously in Italian style and tables with cotton napkins. We ate pizza and it was delicious! We could see other dishes and they looked really tasty too! People were friendly and smiley! Absolutely worth to go!!!

We went to Donna Margherita for an early dinner for my husband's birthday before going to another event at 8pm. We ordered main courses from the specials menu given to us by the waiter. The waiter then returned to ask whether my husband would be happy to substitute boar for lamb in his dish, as the chef didn't have any lamb available. We said this was fine. Our starter of dough balls, which was lovely, came and went. Other diners who had arrived after us had already finished their main courses and yet ours had not arrived. An hour after we first arrived we asked a waiter to check on our mains, as we were very short on time. He first came back to ask use whether we had eaten them?! He checked again with the chef and returned to say that because we had ordered from the previous day's special menu (given to us by the waiter, and presumably with the knowledge of the chef, since we were asked about substituting the lamb) the chef hadn't cooked our food! Without asking what we would like to do, the waiter went off to ask the chefs to cook us the dishes we had ordered, but by this stage we didn't have time to wait and we asked another waiter to cancel the order. Now extremely hungry and running late, we were getting ready to leave when the waiter returned with the bill. Having waited for well over an hour for food we were being charged for the dough balls and one drink each. When we politely expressed our discontent the waiter began to argue with us. After some time we realised an impasse had been reached and we asked to see the manager, who was reluctantly fetched. The manager asked what the problem was and was sympathetic. He apologised for the mistake with the food and immediately cancelled the bill. The little food we ate was lovely, but the service was appalling. We understand that mix-ups happen. However, we were left extremely stressed, running for a train and hungry -- not quite the birthday treat we had anticipated.

Absolutely delightful meal served by lovely staff. My mum and I came for a pre-theatre dinner before a play at BAC opposite; I had the papperdelle with mushrooms (gorgeous mixture of delicate flavours) and she had a napolitana pizza - plenty of capers and fresh-looking sauce on fresh, obviously hand-stretched, paper-thin bread. The staff hit exactly the right balance of friendly/attentive and letting us get on with our meal; when we chose caffe correttos for after they gave great advice without being patronising. And all very reasonably priced for the area. I don't find myself in this neck of the woods often, but if I'm back I'd certainly head here.
