Thinking about making a Hello Auntie booking?

With vintage Vietnamese decorations, exposed brickwork and warm dimmed lighting, this atmospheric restaurant in Marrickville is the ideal location for a cosy meal, romantic date or fun night out. Inspired by traditional Vietnamese cooking, Hello Auntie whips up contemporary Asian dishes with a balance of modernity and motherly care on Illawarra Road in Sydney’s inner west. Everything (except the noodles) is made fresh in Hello Auntie’s kitchen daily, driven by a focus on the absolute best produce available. Designed to be shared, Hello Auntie’s dishes vary in size to suit family eating. There are also cocktails just as creative as the food, beers, wines and Hello Auntie’s trademark slushies – a particular favourite is the whatchamacallit, a mixture of lychees, logan, rambutan and apple juice topped with popping candy for a sweet and refreshing hit very popular with kids (though Hello Auntie offers a version with a shot of rambutan vodka for the adults too)

Gorgeous traditional dishes include banh khot (the Vietnamese answer to pikelets, served with sauteed prawns and smelt roe), ban xeo (sizzling rice pancakes infused with coconut and turmeric) and of course beefy pho – using Auntie’s traditional and time-tested beef stock, the recipe for which is a closely guarded secret. Go the whole hog (or cow) with Hello Auntie’s pho dac biet (‘the lot’), which includes thinly sliced black Angus beef, house-made wagyu meatballs, braised beef brisket and pasture-fed short rib torched to give a heavenly smoky flavour. The bo luc lac is another great choice for beefeaters, seared wagyu in a cold smoked soy, garlic, sesame and wasabi pearl onion marinade, and yes, the bong chuoi vit quay crispy roast duck with banana blossom is just as incredibly delicious as it sounds. As one of Marrickville’s most exciting restaurants it pulls in a crowd from all over Sydney, so we recommend booking for Hello Auntie on Illawarra Road in advance.
