Aussies love Japanese food, and really that should come as no surprise. Healthy, hearty, fresh and heavy on the seafood, Japanese dining has plenty to offer locals to Aus. At Kagura Japanese Restaurant, locals to Surry Hills can indulge in great Japanese food in a chilled cafe-style environment. Bringing together excellent food, chic dining and a perfect spot for Sydney’s über-cool hipsters to photograph their dinner, this local treasure in Foveaux Street is a great spot for food, drinks and hanging out with pals.
When you hear Japanese food, there’s a tendency to immediately think of sushi. And while there are plenty of popular sushi places in Surry Hills, this Foveaux Street cafe is choosing to forge a different path. Sydney’s Kagura Japanese Restaurant offers a selection of Japanese curries, complex and light barbecued skewers and a handful of other seafood dishes. Surry Hills is a bubbling hive of the young and restless, and this laidback cafe offers a chance to indulge in great food in the city.
While Kagura Japanese Restaurant is ostensibly a cafe, there’s more than a handful of influences from fine dining on display here too. The kitchen’s Japanese cuisine is seriously ambitious, as demonstrated by the beautifully plates of food served here consistently. For fresh seafood, locals to Foveaux Street are spoiled for choice, but Kagura Japanese Restaurant is a great option in Surry Hills, with fresh, line caught fish and shellfish in abundance, as well as the big flavours from the far east. Sydney’s young and trendy favour Kagura Japanese Restaurant for its great fine-dining food and its laidback vibe, and it's easy to see why. Always good to visit and never fails to serve nice dishes! Good atmosphere and great Japanese beer. Always a pleasure to visit. Had a revised menu today but equally good as before.
Never fails to serve good food and nice n quiet atmosphere.
Great food, lovely service. Very casual and authentic Japanese food and Japanese experience ! I would highly recommend this place and suggest you ask the chef his recommendations for the best experience.
The food is delicious generally but their sashimi is stand out, such great quality. Lovely staff and a great space, and atmosphere. Drinks menu is great with some really nice sake and Japanese whisky.
The atmosphere at Kagura is fantastic, the staff are friendly and every time I've gone the customers are too, often commenting on plates or whisky selections and asking opinions of the other customers. Kagura truly feels like a Japanese Izakaya and brings back fond memories of my travels in Japan. In true Izakaya fashion it's not huge so even when full it's possible to have a conversation with at your table without having to shout to hear over the other tables and the music selection by Yoshi is always upbeat and varied. Those looking for cheap food and beer are better off down the street at El Loco, if you're after some truly spectacular interpretations of Japanese cuisine paired with one of the best Japanese Whisky collections I've ever seen get down to Kagura now.
Funky little place with great decor and music. Food came out quickly and was cooked well. Service a little lacking, but there's only 1 server for a little restaurant so makes sense. Ordered the smoked pork belly skewers, cumin chips, chicken kaarage with chilli mayo (must try this!) and the miso poached salmon. Fantastic Japanese Whisky range and selection too.
Brilliant food, and great service. It was an extremely hot day, and loved the cold towels to freshen up upon arrival. Excellent sake recommendation. Had the omakase - so fresh and tasty. The john dory, especially, was a highlight!
Absolutely amazing Japanese restaurant with unique sashimi platters that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere - sashimi sardines, john dory, treveally, the list goes on. Delicious sake that complements the food! A must visit!
Delicious, carefully made and considered dishes. Felt like I was back in Japan - chilled little bar with nice tunes. Recommend coming here for a relaxed mid week dinner catch up over some delicious whisky
Lethal cocktails that are too easy to drink, consistently good food, and friendly service to match. Kagura is my go to, have tried almost every dish on the menu, and every time I leave I'm thinking about my next visit.
