The pizzas are thin and bubbly, the ambience is warm, the wine is aplenty, and basically everything else you can want from an authentic Italian eatery is in place at Mama Rosy’s on King Street. Sydney has no shortage of good Italian, but this Newtown gem has cornered the market with a focus on Sicilian-style cuisine and a unique, quirky decor that makes it quite unlike any other. If you like your Italian classically simple, the margherita here is about as authentic (hand flattened and theatrically spun, of course) and delicious as you’ll find; but if you want to wade a bit further into the cuisine then Mama Rosy’s has you more than covered. Try their perfect, handmade gnocchi (just don’t ask for the recipe – that belongs with nonna Gina), the irresistible bufalina or one of their exquisite desserts. Mama Rosy’s is ideal for group dining and special occasions – the antipasto spreads are ideal – as long as you get a booking in early, because things do get busy and bustling here.
