Starting out life as a bustling meat market in 1874, the building that is now the Metropolitan Hotel on Courtney Street in North Melbourne has seen much of the city’s history pass through it. That history lends an atmosphere to the Metropolitan Tap House that would be impossible to recreate elsewhere. This alone makes it a unique place to dine, hang out or watch the footy, but the food and their first-class music and comedy events really establish it as a gastropub several rungs above the average in Melbourne. Conscious of their history, perhaps, Metropolitan Tap House still hold meat at the centre of their philosophy, hand-picking the best meat sourced from Australian farmers to create beautiful bar meals that border on fine-dining. Whatever the occasion, calling for a quick drink or a leisurely meal, the Metropolitan Tap House is a time-tested option.
The Metropolitan Hotel in North Melbourne is etched in history and Melbourne tradition. Operating since 1874, the Metropolitan Tap House within the hotel on Courtney Street is international gastropub dining at its best. What sets this stunning hotel apart from the rest – of which there are a lot in Melbourne – is that it hasn’t done away with the classics in favour of fine dining options, but rather places them side by side to appeal to everyone. Offering craft beer and boutique wine choices, the Metropolitan Tap House is the perfect spot to pop in for a quick drink, long lunch or dinner with friends.
For a classic meal, we recommend going for the metro chicken parma with chips and a garden salad, or for something on the fancy side of life, the lamb 2 ways, double loin ‘barnsley’ lamb chop and lamb shoulder cigar with smashed herb potatoes, dukkah, hung curd, feta and fig with seasoned vegetables for a mouthwatering experience. The Metropolitan Tap House is a North Melbourne institution serving up sensational international dishes. There is a clear reason why this historic gastropub is firmly entrenched into the Melbourne foodscape – be sure to book online to find out why.
Really enjoyed our dinner at The Metropolitan Tap House - food was excellent, atmosphere lovely and the staff were efficient, polite, pleasant and good at their job. We chose Fried Calamari, Bruschetta and Pulled Pork with Chilli jam for entree - all well cooked, tasty and well presented. For mains I had Crispy Pork that came with delicious Asian flavours & vegetables - my partner had chicken, chorizo and beans and our son had the hearty Chicken Parma ... all delicious. The boys enjoyed a delightful, bold tasting Pinot Noir (Giesen The Brothers Pinot Noir) with their meal and I had an old fashioned Ginger beer. Great coffees to finish up with. We loved the fact that the hotel has retained its original and authentic decor - the dining room and front bar are very special because of this. We are always on the lookout for a great old-fashioned pub - and we really found that last night. Its a gem. Prices are higher than ordinary pub fare - but the standard and setting are higher too. Meal portions are also generous. The Metropolitan is highly recommended - we had a great night out.
We have been to the metropolitan hotel many times and the food is great, these ice and ambience is very pleasing. Happy to recommend this venue.
The dining room was warm and cosy but large enough if you wanted to have a large group, Food was lovely and wine was excellent. Staff were attentive without being overbearing.
The food was delicious, but what stood out the most was how lovely and helpful our waiter was. I didn't catch his name but he had red hair. Very attentive and even gave samples of beer to try free of charge
The Metropolitan has a lovely ambience - an old style pub and a large dining room with high ceilings, a lot of space and traditional fittings and fixtures. The menu was varied, from traditional pub fare to interesting mains. One of my friends really loved the corned beef, and the chicken parma was good and not too huge. Unfortunately the service was slow, for both drinks and food orders, but we were kept in the loop - a new waitress had just started - but there was only one other waitress, which was surprising for a busy Saturday night. We were later told that our orders were going to arrive later than usual, and arrived just in time for us to finish our meals before we needed to be at a performance at the Meat Market. I was thankful that I had booked our table two hours before our show started. The other interesting thing was that one of my friends ordered a popular cocktail only to receive a drink that had deviated quite a bit from the recipe! But that was sorted out with good humour. All in all, I would recommend The Metropolitan if you are not in too much of a hurry and stick to the menu....
This is a beautiful old building right next door to the Meat Market performance space. Service for us was slow this night with new staff, delays in getting a drinks list and an hour wait for the meal. Having said that the staff did inform us of the delay to the meal, were helpful, friendly and we were offered a complimentary drink in relation to the delay. The food was good with the lamb and steak perfectly cooked - gnocchi was a little disappointing as it was a little chewy. As the above I hope we're anomalies for the night we went, I would give this place another go.
The venue is very nice with a good bar and a lovely old dining room but I found the menu a bit limited and had trouble choosing. Staff were really nice and the cost for the night was good too. A band started up in the bar as we were nearing the end of our meal. They were so loud we ended up leaving which was a pity as we would have liked to have stayed on a while longer.
Great food, but service was slow. I didn't mind that as I was on my work Christmas lunch as we ended up taking up our afternoon at the pub. Maybe you can have a extra chef at these busy times, especially for the work colleagues who love to work.
The service was good the food was great. The only problem is that the room is very loud, too many hard surfaces. (It might only have been the really really loud women on the next table). All in all though it is a great spot for dinner.
Had been to the Metropolitan many years ago and decided to try it again for a catch up dinner with a friend. Not disappointed.- great food and wine list and attention from very friendly staff. Convenient, quiet location, Recommend highly.
