For delicious contemporary Southeast Asian cuisine, Tenpin on Port Melbourne’s Beach Street is leading the charge. The atmosphere here is hip and sophisticated, featuring an outdoor dining area with gorgeous views of the beach. Swing by for after-work drinks or start your big night off here – drinks with names like Hidden Mule, Smoke ‘n’ Bones and the Bottanica draw in some of Melbourne’s biggest cocktail aficionados.
The food menu at Port Melbourne’s Tenpin is straightforward and to the point, featuring a number of starters, mains, sides and tasty desserts. Share starters like edamame, crispy skinned pork belly or pork and kimchi dumplings to whet your appetite before moving on to hearty mains like the BBQ Wagyu skirt served with nahm jim jaew and green mango, stir-fried tofu and vegetables, the pad Thai or the duck larb made with lime, mint, chili, roast rice, lettuce and cucumber. Round it all off with one of Tenpin’s amazing desserts – go for the banana and sesame fritters, the tropical fruit salad or the spiced coconut cake trifle. It didn’t take long for this Melbourne Asian restaurant to start making waves, so book ahead to ensure a table.
Great food, a lovely atmosphere, and lovely, friendly and attentive staff. The Birds Nest Dumplings are amazing. We had a wonderful evening and will be back again.
Amazing! Best local to ever have! Great chicken wings, amazing roti, amazing cocktails. My fave is the ginger martini! Great curry, and finally - awesome service!
Same great food and friendly service in the new location. Fresh ingredients that never leaves you feeling like you have overeaten or bloated. We love it.
Great menu, authentic, deliciously well-balanced Thai flavours. Light, bright and spacious venue, friendly service. Easy off-Street parking. Good drinks menu. We will definitely be returning. Only negative - portion sizes were a little small.
It was very quiet when we turned up for lunch. The room is light and bright with good beach views and a very "beachy feel". It really feels like a place to do lunch but it seems that most of the crowd shows up in the evenings. We started with Pork and Kimchi Dumplings and Thai Fish Cakes. They were both lovely but curiously lacked salt balance. I requested some salt (thinking that maybe the kitchen leant towards under seasoning) to be told I was the first person ever to request it. The Thai style Port Arlington Mussels and the Duck Larb that followed were perfectly balanced and the extra salt (thankfully) wasn't needed. They also had a nice amount of heat in them with no attempt to "dumb them down" for meeker punters. Not incendiary "Thai hot", but they didn't miss with the chilli....which is a good thing (and meant I did have to ask for a side of chillies like have to at a lot of places). We finished with a shared White choc chai pannacotta with pineapple and cardamom shortbread...and it was superb. The meal was accompanied by a lovely Italian Vermentino. Tenpin's wine list is reasonably priced, cleverly chosen and very "international" (Aussies made up maybe 40% of the winelist). Beer drinkers are well served too. Overall, a really good experience, although I get the sense that Tenpin is still finding its feet a bit and there is better to come.
Celebrated my birthday at Tenpin with my 3 adult children and their partners Food was delicious and servings very generous The cocktails were absolutely sensational they were happy to make me a cocktail not on their menu that i love and it went down a treat We sat upstairs which looks out over the bay although it was a cold night still a great outlook imagine in summer it will certainly be the place to be for sure great staff my only comment would be main meals did not all come out together but as my daughter suggested maybe they thought we were sharing so they staggered the service not sure !!! Food really fresh and great flavors A fantastic night shared with my beautiful family in a great setting - thank you Tenpin
Michael our waiter was great. Really attentive and knowledgeable. The food was really delicious and we enjoyed the fresh flavors. Slightly too much chilli for us in a few of the dishes. The only concern about the restaurant environment was that the acoustics down stairs were full-on loud and clangy. We couldn't hear ourselves chat easily. It is a common over site in restaurant design in Melbourne and a reason why a lot of guests won't return to a place. Some acoustic panels or soft surfaces carefully designed into the space would have a huge impact on softening the sound and keeping conversational noise contained. Without it the sound ricochets around creating a chaotic cacophony of noise that makes it difficult to hear anything. My job is designing large visitor destinations and interior spaces. Sound management is a big part of the design consideration. It is treated with the same regard as lighting or furnishings in term of its importance in creating an ambience and an enjoyable visitor experience that encourages return visitation. Unfortunately this element is often over looked because it is thought of as expensive and unnecessary. Not the case. It can be really cost effective and easy and is so important. Hope this contribution helps.
We had a great night at Tenpin as the food and cocktails were sensational. The service however was very average. Staff were friendly but very slow. Numerous times we went to the bar to order our drinks as we were tired of waiting to be served and in the end we would order eight drinks instead of the four required just so we didn't have to wait so long for service. The same occurred with food when we couldn't find a waitress to take an addition to our order. We would definitely like to go back as we enjoyed the food although would probably try dining downstairs with the hope service would be a little more attentive.
We loved our experience at Tenpin! We took Mum there for Mother's Day and it was the perfect blend of casual and special occasion. The food was so delicious, fresh and flavoursome! The service was very good as well. Love the setting and the fit out. I will definitely go back, especially to try the white choc chai panna cotta for dessert, unfortunately they had run out because it was so popular!
Friends and I had a great experience at Tenpin over the weekend. Food was amazing and fresh and the staff were all friendly and very attentive. Food servings are generous and great price for what you are getting. Highly recommend Tenpin to everyone.
We have been to Tenpin a few times and the food has been delicious. This time however, not so much. The crab cakes were very rubbery and the prawn and chicken salad was very light on prawns and chicken. A $45 banquet was very expensive for what we got unfortunately. The thing that lets this restaurant down though is the lack of service. Generally seems unfriendly and uncaring. A hot night and empty water bottles on the table remained unfilled. No smiles from the staff. Would have been nice to have been offered more rice too.
Enjoyed dinner here with Friends on a Saturday night and were not dissapointed. Standout dishes include Corn Fritters, pork belly salad, fried squid, waygu skirt and Chicken Curry. Highly recommended Tenpin to anybody who luvs moden Asian dinning without having to line up outside like cattle to get a table and having the option of making a reservation like civilised people.
Tenpin is our new local great restaurant. The food is wonderful and the service is friendly and professional. The owners of Tenpin have the Midas touch. Don't strike this restaurant off your list, it is 10 out of 10.
The food was great, the venue was great, the maitre d was great but they forgot to bring out one dish and I had to ask after a long wait to get their attention, saying that I find getting wait staff's attention in any restaurant difficult these days but that is another story! Lastly when paying the bill the staff member made a comment which whilst not intended to be insulting was ageist, I would caution staff to be cognisant about the comments made to clientele, I'm a bit sick of those of us in our early 40's having to make excuses for those in their 20's, because 'that is what that generation is like', I don't think that we should keep putting up with behaviour that we don't likes it because people are younger! Anyway, rant over, all that aside, I would go back because the food was excellent, but I would hope that the management of the restaurant take this feedback on board for future reference.
A booking was made 10 days in advance; when we arrived we were taken to a narrow bench for 4 people with high stools - bench faced a wall! I objected strongly, advising that we were both 70 and over - staff member said that if we wanted to sit at a table in future we should say we had a bad back or similar. I then decided to leave but not before I said I would be contacting Quandoo with a poor review, whereby he found a table that had been reserved for someone else who was late, so their punishment would be the bench! To his credit he came over several times during the evening to explain the menu and to see if everything was OK - even when he was moving us on from the table, it was done very professionally. The wait staff were most efficient and the food was delicious, pity about the poor start.
Excellent flavours, produce and service at this little gem in Beach Street. The pork belly dish is stellar! Really happy to have a restaurant of this calibre in the local 'hood. Pricing is very reasonable for the experience and quality that you get at Tenpin.
Great food, lovely venue and staff are fabulous. Food is quite spicy, which we liked but some other guests food a bit hot. Only issue is it is a bit noisy, so hard to have a conversation. We booked and had been advised of a specific table but when we got there it had been forgotten so we got a table with a pole in the middle so we couldn't actually see all the people on our table of 4! Staff did their best to make good the situation, which was appreciated, but pretty big stuff up for us. Would still consider going back though.
Very warm welcome on arrival. Service very attentive. The food was excellent. Finished off with a lovely pot of mint tea. To top it off we saw the Spirit of Tasmania all lit up as the boat sailed away. Perfect evening at Tenpin-Thankyou.
Banquet dinner for 8 - it was no hassle to cater for 3 vegetarians in our group and everyone left full and happy! This place is a local favourite for our family since it opened , keep up the great work Tenpin.
Food was delicious. We had an assortment of starters that would really have been plenty of food but opted for a couple of mains. The sticky braised beef rib fell off the bone and the Green curry was delicious and spicy! Iwould highly recommend Tenpin to anyone
As always, Tenpin delivered awesome food and awesome service in a very pleasant dining environment. We'll definitely be back and highly recommend Tenpin to others
The food was spectacular and Vincent (?!) was extremely helpful and obliging throughout my many booking changes. Having read about this place online in The Weekly Review I looked forward to enjoying some lovely new flavours and was aware of there being a 'share' table which we ended up at. The place is bright and airy and noisy so don't go there for an intimate dinner! Can't wait to enjoy upstairs dining when it opens.
Tenpin was great. The staff are friendly and attentive staff, good choice of dishes and food was fresh and delicious. Cocktails looked amazing, will definitely be back to try them :) Would definitely recommend
The food was 5 star restaurant quality, I rate Tenpin as good as the Spirit House on the Sunshine Coast, absolutely amazing and I recommend everyone to experience the food, service and atmosphere.
The food was good, but seriously, if I wanted to dine with others at the same table, I would have come with them. We were sat at a "communal" table and the space between each couple was less than a dinner plate. My elbows were 20cm from the guy next to me and my wife was the same distance from the guy's partner. NO possibility of a personal let alone intimate discussion. When we were shown to the table I said, "no, we booked a table upstairs" to which the waitress says, no that is for drinks only. Well, why do you have it as a choice when you book on line if it is not actually a choice! I just don't get why restaurants do this sot of thing!
Highly recommend experiencing TenPin. I have just celebrated my birthday here as well as a surprise 60th for my parents a few months back. The staff are wonderful and extremely helpful, the food is absolutely divine and such a pleasure, the drinks are delicious and the setting speaks for itself watching the sunset over the bay and watching the cruise ships arrive and depart.
The food was very flavoursome, fresh and colourful along with being reasonably priced. A couple of the dishes were a bit chilli-hot for my palette (I did notice the seeds were included) but I was able to remove them to make it more suitable for my liking. It was quite busy when we arrived for lunch so the noise level was fairly high but not OTT. Overall, a great experience and we'll definitely be back :o)
The food at Tenpin was lovely however our table of three found it very loud. It is a big concrete-walled space with no soft furnishings or buffers to absorb the noise. Service was good although the staff found it hard to hear us (unsurprisingly).
Tenpin, well We loved it,the food was great as was the atmosphere! We had the chicken ribs, pork belly, chicken & mint salad along with the traditional Pad Thai & Rendang, all delicious, will definitely be back.
We enjoyed the experience very much. The food has great flavors and the staff are excellent. Also went out of their way to make sure we had a table for four instead of the shared table as one of our guests had just had a knee replacement. We will certainly be recommending it to our friends.
Awesome cocktails and always to much food when you choose the well priced feed me option. Tenpin is in my Top 5 places to eat in Port Melbourne
Positives: -Food is excellent. Really, really good. -Service is good. Negatives: -Wines by the glass are limited and they were out of all three of three wines featured on the front page. - An enormous communal table runs through the middle of the space meaning there are only a handful of tables. All other spots are on high stools at bar-like tables that seem like an afterthought.
Started with a very nice cocktail and ordered a few small and big plates to share. Food was pretty good with some interesting different combinations, flavors etc. Service needs a bit of work. Didn't really explain the menu and weren't proactive for the rest of the night e.g had to ask for water, chase up a missing dish etc. It's a fairly new place so might just be new staff who need some more time. Overall a nice meal in a great location.
The food was great. All the staff were super friendly but the follow up was not there. We had to flag staff down a couple of times to order more dishes and additional drinks. Also we stated at the start of the meal we would like med chilly not hot. After our initial waitress disappeared the next 2 dishes we ordered were WAY too hot! Very reasonably priced for such a high standard of food and drinks. We will defiantly be back.
Great food , slightly small portions- designed to share but we ordered 3 plus a main pad Thai for 2 adults and 1 child. Were still hungry so ordered dessert too, fried banana fritters were great. Overall lovely experience and live guitarist upstairs was a nice surprise and very talented. Service a little slow, but still a good experience hence 5/6. Would go back.
Modern Asian that you'd expect from a top Melbourne restaurant without the pretension. They clearly use high quality fresh ingredients and every dish we ordered was a winner (although the betel leaf was a personal favorite). All comes with lovely friendly service. Excellent value and great fit out too. We will be back!
The food was super tasty - we shared the pork and peanut salad with prawn crackers, mussels and kimchi dumplings to start, and then had the beef rendang and chicken curry. I'm not typically a Riesling fan but this one was amazing. Absolutely great location watching the sea and really comfortable space.
Despite booking a table upstairs we were placed in a brightly lit row of close-knit tables on the lower floor. Service was friendly but not amazing. Food was mostly amazing, but let down somewhat by a batch of near-tasteless, grainy dumplings and a cocktail that can only be described as...not good. Apparently 'not for the faint of heart' translates to 'challenging even to the most adventurous palate'. For the price I expected just a bit more value.
Food was very good and staff friendly. However, asked three times for food not to come quickly and all at once but it still did. Had the same issue last time. There was not another group using our table after us so there was no need to rush us. The fitout looks good but it is very very noisy. They say they plan to put in some sound insulation - it's needed. Would recommend going.
Service was great and all the food at Tenpin was delicious. Great small dishes perfect for sharing, but our favourite dish was a chicken curry. Will definitely be back again!
Had a brilliant time at Tenpin - the vibe was great! Delicious tasting food - love the hint of chilli in the dishes! Good service! Will definitely be back!
Vibe was great. Walked in and open space bar was welcoming with the kitchen just above. Cocktails where tops, same with the food. Loved the pork and shrimp dumplings. Wanted more of them. Just a little upset about not being able to get their chai panna cotta dessert. Good things often sell out. I'll be coming back.
We were made very welcome and were changed to a better one as soon as we arrived. It was our fist visit and found the experience to be a really pleasant one - great cocktail, lovely food a helpful staff. We have just moved to the area and are excited to have this within walking distance
Probably the best Asuan fusion restaurant in Melbourne (well that i have been to!) Everything is delicious and the service is good. We liked the new location as well. This would have been a 6 except they could not give us a bloody mary and the chablis on the wine list was sold out. thoroughly recommend.
The food was full of flavour which is a relief as Port Melbourne could do with some more flavoursome food options. I can recommend the harvey bay scallops and the crisp skinned pork belly in particular. I liked the feel of the restaurant. We were met at the door by a very pleasant and helpful man. However the other members of the team seemed a little bored and impatient.
Food was tasty and well presented. Could have been spicier but that is my preference and not all diners like very spicy food. Can not speak highly enough of the staff. They were attentive, friendly and took the time to explain the menu and how it was designed to be eaten. 6 stars for service.
The food as always was excellent. It was very fresh and tasty. Had the chicken salad, the crispy pork salad and special massamum curry. Topped of with a scoop of coconut ice cream and mango sorbet. All shared between 2. Couldn't fault any of it.
A stunning new space right on the beach in Port Melbourne. The food, flavours and service were excellent. The big opening to the kitchen above the bar offered a theatre type experience and connection to the chefs process. Will be a regular for me ;-)
Tenpin was great. The food was delicious and the staff were helpful and pleasant. The Pork Belly and Calamari were a stand out. We will be back!
Beautifully prepared fresh food with a variety that should suit all tastes. For those who like it hot, the Som tum salad hits the chilli high notes - but best avoided if hot chilli is not your thing. Expansive wine list, including excellent by the glass choices. Working out a return date!
