The Board Inn of suburban Chester-le-Street is one of two Tavistock Italia Gastro Pubs. This, we can assure you, means great things. It means all the rustic charm and heartwarming ambience that are synonymous with the traditional British pub, fused wonderfully with wholesome Italian cooking. You can find The Board Inn along Penshaw View in Birtley and once you’ve arrived you’ll soon see there’s very little not to love. The food is expertly crafted with love and care while the bar is stocked full of quality wine and beer, making the The Board Inn a lovely choice for dinner as well as drinks. People from all over the Newcastle and Tyneside area love this place and hence it gets packed out fast – best to book ahead.
Dear diners, on Saturday 24th June, the restaurant is hosting a live music night from 7pm with a 3-course set menu for £35 per person.
There’s a very clear ethos at The Board Inn and that’s to make sure simple, delicious, fresh Italian food is served in a setting that the folk of Chester-le-Street will know quite well. That setting is, of course, the classic British pub. Loved for so many reasons and here made also to feel like a local Italian bar, The Board Inn is not short on character. From this pub restaurant on Penshaw View in Birtley you can expect exposed original beams, wooden crates of wines lining the walls, dark wooden furniture and soft, dim light. There are varied spaces – including a conservatory – for drinking or for dining, meaning The Board Inn at Birtley is fit for all occasions.
At this gem of suburban Chester-le-Street you’ll find early bird, kids, and Sunday lunch menus, but it’s the a la carte that really steals the show. On it, you’ll find Italian flavours that are sophisticated and beyond the norm in terms of what people may expect from casual Italian dining. The choice of antipasti to begin with is vast and curious, while the pizzas are prepared with traditional toppings as well as some slightly more modern. And it’s the same story with the pasta, as it happens, with variations and ingredients that will satisfy even the pickiest of palettes. A highlight for us is the tagliatelle alla Contadina, strips of fillet steak cooked with wild mushrooms in a rich red wine sauce. From Newcastle to Birtley, rejoice! The Board Inn is the real deal.
Very much welcomed and could choose own table.. drinks were served promptly even tho it was 7pm on a busy Saturday and seats were being filled quickly. our food was piping hot with large portions. Starters and Mains left us too full for dessert. The house red was delicious! We asked to have a delay before ordering coffee and this was adhered to. A very relaxing and enjoyable evening was Order of the Day at the Tavistock Board Inn, Birtley. As we had driven there we asked to take our half bottle of red home with us. Again, No Problemo !
Tasty gorgeous food with fabulous service every time. Early bird menu is worth every penny and quality of food or size of portions are not compromised. Highly Recommend this restaurant.
Staff were very friendly, a wonderful ambience in the restaurant, good service and most importantly a good choice of meals on the menu and especially good food. Will certainly return.
Great service Lovely food as always , looking forward to going back
This was a quick return after our first ever visit roughly a fortnight ago. On this occasion we brought family to enjoy the meals and atmosphere. We were not disappointed. Everyone enjoyed it. It was extremely busy and the owner and staff worked hard to accommodate everyone. The one thing I would say is that whilst staff are attentive, orders, bills, and/or drinks, can be forgotten when requested and need to asked for again. This is only a slight grip but it did occur as well on our first visit so perhaps this needs be to be addressed. Overall a splendid dining experience.
What a welcoming oasis for our evening meal when we are travelling north. Staff are friendly, the ambiance is cheerfull and comfortable even in the most inclement weather. The food we have been served is outstanding in quality, flavour and most imaginagive. There is always something new I'd like to try on the menu but with old faithful choices too. We will continue to arrange our trips to pass here and reserve a table for out treat of a supper.
Lovely place. Calamari to start could have done with longer in the dryer, the batter was still soggy. The rest of the food was amazing. Service seemed a little too efficient if there is such a thing, in the way of we felt rushed out. 3 courses in just over an hour. As soon as we put our final mouthfuls in the plates would be whipped away . Great experience, just a few little niggles. We will definitley be back though
Love this place but unfortunately we booked for lunch at the same time as a rather large 50th birthday who took up the whole restaurant so we were in the conservatory which was fine. Felt a bit like party crashes though as almost everybody was part of the party. Also food wasn’t quite what I ordered but the staff were sooo busy I didn’t like to fuss. I think it would have been an idea to warn us at the time of booking that there was a large party in at that time
Love this restaurant, which was a lucky find on a previous visit to the area. There is a great atmosphere, the staff are all friendly and efficient (although their rendering of 'Happy Birthday' won't win Britain's Got Talent!), but above all else, the food is fantastic, with authentic Italian dishes and a great range of wines to accompany the meal.
Booked on behalf of my better half for her and her friend. It was quiet as it was early Monday evening. The staff were happy for them to take their time ordering and eating while they had a good catch up. I got a takeaway pizza from the restaurant when I picked them up. It was wonderful.
