Sometimes names can be misleading, but you’ve got the right impression at this place. A humming, funky cafe and restaurant on High Street, The Espresso Room roasts their own beans on site and pull shots of some of the most addictively aromatic coffee you’ll find in Northcote. Open early every morning, it’s a no-brainer for the day’s first caffeine fix, but that is only the start. The Espresso Room also has incredible food, of course for the Melbourne institution Sunday brunch but also for an impressive lunch, whether you’re trying to impress yourself, someone special or a business delegation. The menu ranges from hefty and hearty (pulled pork and calamari sliders on black brioche, for instance) to dainty and delicate (the macarons here are to die for), so it can really suit any mood and hunger level.

The food here is always delicious and reasonably priced, and the waitstaff are super friendly and attentive - you never have to wait long to be served. My only quibble, if you can even call it that, is that there are so many tempting menu options that it can be difficult to choose!
Apart from the great food and coffee, I appreciated the layout of the cafe. The table arrangements and low partition wall ensured privacy, even at a busy time.
Our food took a long time to come out but it was inevitable as it was a very busy mother’s day, otherwise the food was very yummy but the portions were a bit big. Overall it was a great restaurant
