About The Gate at Bournheath
There is the opinion that the great British pub is in decline, but down in Bournheath on the outskirts of Bromsgrove, they have an inn that is more than keeping the tradition alive. The Gate at Bournheath may have a heritage dating back to the 17th century, but their menu is up to date and includes Mexican and American favourites alongside the pub grub fare. Take a trip along to Dodford Road, just a short drive out of Bromsgrove, for a meal guaranteed to delight the whole family and to have you counting down the days until your next visit. Remember to book a table, though, as they do get busy.

Chris & Jan Lloyd have been in the pub business since 1969, managing various establishments around the West Midlands, and since 1976, they’ve been the driving force behind The Gate at Bournheath. Along with their son Gareth and his partner Lucy, they still man the bar-ricades and offer up local cask ales and a menu that brings together the best of British bar cuisine with the tastes that they have picked up on their travels and brought back to Dodford Road on the outskirts of Bromsgrove.
The menu at The Gate is filled with pub grub favourites – gammon and egg, breaded scampi, beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas – with more international dishes, particularly from the USA and Mexico. Take your pick from fajitas and burritos, blackened chicken with Cajun garlic butter sauce or jerk chicken with traditional rice & peas. Local tastes are catered for too: Aubrey Allen faggots are always a favourite in the West Midlands, as is the vegetable balti, and their beers are sourced from as close to Bromsgrove as possible. Book a table and set a course for Dodford Road in Bournheath for a family feast to remember.
Great Mexican food always delivered by staff who actually look happy to be working! A hidden gem in Bromsgrove but could do with better lager being offered on tap.
Amazing good value - especially the specifically designed Bank Holiday Menu. I was looking fwd to sampling the Cream Egg Cheesecake- but sadly there was just not enough room in my belly (cod and chips - HIGHLY recommended)
Great food, lovely welcome by the staff and on a busy Easter Sunday the food for all 12 of us arrived timely and great quality.
This is the 2nd time in a week we have spent with you 9th April my pre birthday suprise meal & today my actual birthday. Fantastic food lovely staff can't fault anything. Thank you for making my celebration special Anne Tapsott
Wow where do i start? From the moment you step into the place, until you leave, its second to non, upon entering the building your greeted with a smile & a warm welcome, sorry i didnt get any names, but you are all excellent, & that includes the change over of the staff on Friday 4th November, the establishment should be proud of you all, now onto the food, we dont normally have starters, but for £1 what could go wrong? Well nothing we both chose the pulled pork nacho's, no skimping on the amount, & ever so tasty, well worth the price at normal rate, then onto the mains, i had the Tex Mex, i had been here before but many moons ago, the steak was cooked pefectly, the knife just sliced through it with ease, the chilli had a kick to it, & i decided to have the Mexican rice, however it came with chips, i didnt complain as the food was excellent, then the waitress came over & appologised for the mistake, no need, & then came back with the rice at no extra cost, great customer service, my eyes was getting bigger than my belly, & i was unable to finish it all, as whenever i look to eat out, i firstly look at the desert menu, my partners fajita's where also excellently cooked & presented, so after a 10/15 minute break we had dessert, Missazippi mud pie, it didnt dissapoint, every mouthful was so tasty, fluffy & light, just talking about it now, i want to go back for more
This is a lovely place to eat. Whether you want lunch with ladies, a romantic meal a deuce or a celebration with the family his is the perfect place. We have been coming to The Gate for over 30 years but hadn't visited for a few years. The food is exciting and excellent quality. There is something for everyone. Our favourite is the signature Tex Mex steak with 3 alarm bell chilli. It's cooked perfectly to your choice. Served with salad and your choice of chips etc. Personally the Cajun fries are big favourite. The fish and chips looked like Moby Dick had been landed and it was all fantastically fresh. The English Mojitio was amazing and very moorish. Excellent value and the fix price menus offer an affordable way to have something incredible, different and very filling. I would definitely recommend a visit. We're going back next week - I can't wait. The staff are friendly and attentive and very helpful. 5*
Fantastic food, fantastic service. High on quality and quantity too. Had an amazing and substantial sharer starter but I was gutted not to be able to quite finish my main course so our server kindly packed up the leftovers so I could take them home. Recommend anyone wanting to eat here book early and don't eat for a few days beforehand! Ps for anyone on a diet don't be put off. One of my dining partners had a fantastic salad in place of chips with her steak and staff were more than happy to provide an extra spoon for her to share a fab home made dessert with her husband. ( who really enjoyed the dessert too but would probably have rather had it all to himself! )
The Gate at Bournheath continues to offer excellent food and drink with the friendliest of staff. An excellent selection of traditional food well cooked and presented, or if you like things spicy you can't go wrong with the Mexican, cajun and Jerk offerings....just dont mistake the halepeno peppers for sliced cherry tomatoes!
We use this restaurant fairly regularly and the food is always of a good standard and reasonably priced and this visit was no exception. We had the Sunday Lunch set menu. I had a starter of potato skins which were delivered promptly, the portion was a good size and was nice and hot. My husband had the garlic mushrooms which he also enjoyed. We both had roast beef for main course and again the food portion was a good size and the food was hot. Finally for desert I had the crème brulee which again was very nice. The staff are friendly and efficient and we would visit the restaurant again without hesitation.
One of our favourite places did not disappoint us. My son had hoped we would book the Gate At Bournheath as he loves the blackened steak. They had come from London to be with us at the weekend. For the first time we tried the pulled pork tacos for starters. They were heavenly. The desserts, too, are really good. The only negative I can think of is that you should not come here if you are trying to lose weight. Service was very good and the whole evening was a great success.
Excellent experience, the food and service were top class, 3 out of the 5 of us had the fish and chips and we were not disappointed. The fish was beautifully cooked and a really crispy and light batter and a super piece of fish . 4 of us had the very light and tasty sticky toffee pudding and this was delicious. A great place to dine and that is why whenever we travel up from Southampton to see our relatives from Birmingham we meet up and dine at the Gate
Food quality is very high and always consistent. Staff are friendly and polite Our last visit unfortunately was not the best, nothing to do with food but the wait for it. We waited 60 minutes for the starters - our children were hungry and getting very restless. We actually went to the bar and purchased some crisps for them! The waitress did take the cost of the starters off the bill, given the starters are only £0.99p each this was not a significant gesture. The waitress serving did keep coming back to us to apologise but it was always another 5 minutes. The mains did arrive after we finished the starters but I think the initial wait was all too much. We have been here a lot over the years and now think it is time to give it a rest for a while. I do however think it is worth a visit, especially if you like Mexican fare.
Ate at the Gate at Bournheath for the first time in years and what a treat. Went with my husband, daughter and son in law. Wonderful experience. We like to eat early so booked for 6.00pm. This gave us a starter for a £1 with each main meal. The food was delicious and plentiful. The service was excellent and the surroundings very comfortable. We will definitely be going again and would highly recommend this restaurant.
Birthday treat for my wife with friends,Very nice atmosphere, Staff great and very pretty, Food excellent ?. A small problem with the drinks bill promptly sorted by a lovely member of staff ,iwas confused she was confused but quickly sorted, Great. All in all a great evening. The only niggle that my friend and myself had was the strawberry creme brulee was very poor and expensive four for a £1.00 in Lidl. But please try for yourself this is just our opinion , And yes we will be booking again,
I would highly recommend The Gate at Bournheath. Two dishes you should try are the blackened steak and slow cooked lamb which were excellent. Good atmosphere in the restaurant and good service.
I give 10 out of 10 to The Gate at Bournheath. We all had a great time with fantastic service and food. The choice is brilliant with something for everyone's taste.
The food was excellent and good value. However although the waiting staff were very welcoming they could have been more attentive. At one point after waiting some time I went to the bar to order drinks because I couldn't attract any attention, soon after we asked for sweet menus which didn't arrive so had to ask again. However these are only minor gripes as overall we had a very pleasant evening
Be hungry... huge portions if you opt for a starter. We could have jumped straight to a dessert after the sharing starter! Great food, service good but not revolutionary. Plenty of choice on the menu but not too much to be overwhelming - nice choice of alternative beers too, rather than the usual mundane selection. Well worth a visit!
The booking was very smooth. We were welcomed and seated very quickly. Order was taken very quickly. We decided to share a starter - no 2nd plate was provided the starter was look warm bordering on cold and the taco was too hard to eat. That was discounted on the bill at the end of the night and the rest of our meal was excellent. Waitresses were very friendly too.
Easy booking online, the food as usual very good, fresh vegetables cooked to perfection and a satisfying portion, one very slight disappointment, there was a big party going on which was a little noisy, but hey, I'm not a party pooper, the owners are doing it right by the amount of satisfied people filling the restaurant. Just keep up the high standards you have set yourselves. Good luck. Alan
We had excellent meal, complemented by good service. Food was very tasty and spicy! Only reason I didn't give a maximum score was that there was a slight mix up with my order but it was sorted without question and quickly. The original waitress even came over to apologise later which, I thought, wasn't necessary but welcome. Overall a great experience and we will certainly return for another meal
Staff very attentive and friendly. Restaurant was vey clean. Toilets immaculate also. 7 people in my party and all agreed would go again. Restaurant and pub vey busy when we left but all staff seemed to be smiling through it. Car park gets very busy so best to dine early especially on a Sunday lunch time.
The gate is a lovely restaurant, either for just a couples night out or a family occasion, the food is plentiful so if you have a small appetite I would advise just one course, you get a lot for your money and it's always hot and tasty. The staff are very welcoming, helpful and friendly.
As always the food was absolutely perfect. It is our favourite place to eat out, The staff could not have been more attentive either. We are really looking forward to another visit soon. The only disappointment is it it is some distance away for us, otherwise we could stay longer and have more drinks
This was my first visit to the Gate. Went with friends from work on recommendation. The food is excellent and piping hot. My steak was cooked to perfection and the presentation overall excellent. The staff here are top quality, friendly and helpful with a smile for everyone. I'm looking forward to going back soonest.
Visited The Gate once again and once again it was very good. Saturday night and it was very busy, but a good atmosphere and very good food. We took our Son and girlfriend, it was for his birthday. The jerk steak didn't disappoint him. He always says I'll try something different, but never does!
We were given a really nice table, normally when there's only two you're squeezed in a corner, staff were very friendly and the food was lovely. They asked for specific food items not to be put on my plate and they listened too. Also a very nice and warm feeling to the pub.
We have given several 5 star reviews to the Gate in the past, but since bring diagnosed with intolerances its just not somewhere I can eat. Almost every aspect of every meal is preprepared and therefore the choices are scarce and inflexible. I was offered potato skins with vegetables as a filling for a starter. Even when I preordered a meal several hours in advance, and despite confirmation on arrival and when my guests were ordering, a standard meal was served causing my guests to have finisheed thier starters before mine was served. We waited more than half an hour after our booked table wthout being served before going to ask or service. When intolerances are not a choice and can cause severe consequences eating out is rare, but shouldnt be such a massive risk. For the same price as a freshly prepared meal from scratch at somewhere like the Vernon Arms, I dont think there's any comparrison.
Our experience at The Gate at Bournheath was excellent and one of the best Christmas meals we have had. The waitresses were very accommodating and cheerful.
Had a great evening at the Gate this evening. This is our second visit in n the last few months and it didn't disappoint Fabulous food really enjoyed our meal - staff were very friendly and helpful. Price was very reasonable for what we ordered. Will certainly be returning again very soon.
I booked a table to celebrate a 2 year family loss of my father, as always the staff were very helpful, we were booked into the conservatory for convienience has we had an 11 month old baby, the staff were very easy going and made the meal much more enjoyable Than you
I have previously eaten here and once again it didn't disappoint !. We were welcomed with a smile and seated very quickly, the waitress served our drinks quickly. The food was wonderful, and the portion sizes were good, so much so I couldn't fit a pudding in! Would definitely recommend any day!!
Busy pub/restaurant but we were served promptly and the food arrived quickly. Staff were very attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble. Food was delicious and plentiful. Error on bill, only a small one , but this has happened before. Once the staff were informed of the slight error the bill was immediately corrected. We will be visiting again.
Service poor throughout. First main out ,several minutes for last to come, by which time meals were cold. One chicken meal dry. This was reported to staff when they asked how was meal, no one seemed interested except to say other people had chicken enchiladas and had not complained. This was really not good service or acceptable. Have been using the Gate for over 25 years and had many great meals, but have noticed over last few visits that it is nowhere near as good as it was. May have to cross it off our list for the future.
The Gate is an extremely popular venue and we would suggest that booking is essential. The restaurant was full on the evening of our visit but our table was still ready on time and the food was served quickly. The portion sizes are generous and staff were very attentive. All together our party had an extremely good night.
Husband had the pan fried sea bass and I had the fantastic tex mex - couldn't fault either. Great value for money, we were sat in the conservatory which has less atmosphere than the main part of the pub and was a little bit tired in terms of decor, that said, thoroughly enjoyed out lunch. We'll definitely return.
Group of 4 adults Arrived a little early so took drink out to garden Waitress came out to find us when table ready Lovely food Pleasant service Good price Only negative was very loud today until large group left - no reflection on pub though Will be returning
When arrived we were taken to our reserved table but no menus were given so had to get them ourselves. But we then ordered and food came fairly quickly, couldn't fault the food at all, always high standard, I could of maybe done with more BBQ sauce with Santa Fe chicken. Then we weren't offered desert menus but we didn't want one anyway, I'd definitely go back just service weren't too great
Wow lovely fresh food always wonderful and a great choice of menu. We have been coming here for 20 years and it is still amazing. The Tex Mex is my favourite. Lovely smilely waitress and efficient service. I can't wait to come here again. Highly recommend. Enjoy!!!!!
Great food, eat in the conservatory, which is great for a large group like us with small children. Prompt service, with pleasant staff. We had a variety of food, everyone enjoyed, even my very fussy son, ' chicken nuggets are better than macdonalds' got to be good!!
Fantastic meal at the Gate, party of 8, plenty of menu choice, good value, good food and good service. The key lime pie was more like a lemon tart but other than that could not fault a thing. Fabulous evening and the pub/ restaurant was extremely busy
Booked on a Saturday evening So very busy, however staff & service very good. We booked as a petty of 4 One of our friends cannot eat spicey food Anymore, so asked for gammon & eggs Biut sadly the waitress' said they no longer sell.even thought returning customers as still asking for gammon Ias the gate only caters for chillli loving foodies, sadly we won't. Ever returning with our friends.
Top quality food and huge plate fulls. Almost too much food on plate. Food is better than you expect when you look at the menu. Excellent environment and great service plus all at great prices. Been twice now and this could be my new favourite eatery!!
Massive portions, delicious food! The Monday special deal was very good, but I'm not sure I'd have a starter if I go again, as the portions are so big. In particular, my friend had the platter as his main, and it could have easily served 2!
Huge portions of food, I don't think anybody managed to finish their meal, the food is really tasty though. We booked the Gate for a birthday treat for my son's 10th birthday. The staff were really friendly and we all enjoyed our meals. Didn't have to wait around which is great when you have kids.
Lovely evening out service excellent. I have food sensitivites and although there was only one main I couuld have the staff were very helpful a attentive to my needs. Will be back. Perhaps an additional vegan main for gluten sensitive diners might be helpful.
Visited on a Saturday lunchtime. Good choice of food. Staff were friendly, food was good and service was good. There was no rush for us to leave the table, so we had a nice relaxing catch up with family. Would definitely recommend and return.
Great staff and service, the food is always delicious and they could definitely afford to cut down on the portion sizes a little, you couldn't pile more food on your plate at a carvery than they give you! Sticky toffee pudding is the winner.
The Gate was extremely busy when we went for Sunday lunch but we were shown to our table at the time we had booked with no delay. The meal was excellent and the service was efficient, polite and friendly. We will go there again.
Food is amazing, reasonably priced as well. Staff are friendly but we did wait a while sometimes when we wanted another drink, we went on a Sunday so only 2 staff seemed to be working in the restaurant area but I cannot fault the food, been another 3 times since this date.
