About The Honor Oak

There’s heritage, and then there’s heritage. The Honor Oak, formerly St. German’s (and before that St. Germain’s Hotel), in Brockley’s Forest Hill in London falls firmly into the latter category. First noted in 1896, this classic local pub has a history longer than some nation states. The name, settled in 2007, is home to contemporary British food and great ales in London. There’s a warm welcome, as you’d expect from a pub of this calibre, for visitors day and night at The Honor Oak.

Further Information

London’s south east is unfairly maligned as an area with a plethora of soulless watering holes and takeaway places. The Honor Oak in Forest Hill comprehensively puts that stereotype to bed. Serving up some of the finest pub grub in Brockley, this is a pub that will rival anything you’ll find in Central. Chef Robert Radcliffe makes excellent use of his ten years working in some of London’s best gastropubs to ensure that the Saint German Road local offers only the best British pub food and that the menu changes in line with the seasons.

From the moment The Honor Oak throws open its Saint German Road doors (10am daily) there’s food. For our gluttonous selves, this can only be a good sign, and we’re partial to a pastry or two from the kitchen, before lunch gets underway at 12pm. Locals to Forest Hill and Brockley know that The Honor Oak’s Sunday lunch menu is the answer to family visits and hard-to-shift hangovers, and the evening menu offers tasty morsels from contemporary British cooking. We can only rave about the smoked ham hock ballotine with homemade piccalilli, although we’re assured that devilled scallops are just as good. For private events, the Whisky Room offers dining for up to 60 guests and the team are happy to offer a personalised service following a consultation with staff. This is a local pub in the very best sense: great food, affable staff and a great range of drinks and ales on tap – the finest in London gastropubs.

Our reservation wasn't on the system, we were quickly seated tho'. Our server Kelly was lovely, advising us on the menu. She did seem a bit let down behind the scenes, had to update on long wait for main course, no cointreau for liqueur coffee, lack of coffee spoons, and earl grey the for our t drinker which was not wanted. Fortunate we were with good friends and had lots to talk about, food excellent when arrived.

Monday night is Steak Night. Two of us has the steak which was excellent. Unfortunately, the heating was down which was being repaired so towards the end of the evening, it got a bit chilly. The service was friendly and the helpings generous.

Food was excellent. The sea bass was absolutely unusual to say nothing of the cabbage. The chips were truly magnificent for the other dishes. Great.
