You’d be forgiven for thinking that Bert & Roy’s was some magician duo, given that the tricks they work in the kitchen turn out some of Bondi’s best Thai and fusion food, spread over breakfast, lunch and dinner. How is it possible to juggle traditional western breakfasts, coffee of the kind that Sydney’s bean snobs won’t turn their noses up at, and Thai food given an international twist? We don’t know, but Bert & Roy’s secret seems to work, with their Bondi Road premises regularly packed to the high-ceiling rafters with diners.

The day starts very early for the eponymous heroes of Bondi Thai fusion cafe and restaurant Bert & Roy’s, with their breakfast menu, famous in this part of Sydney, available from 7am until 3pm. The biggest of Bert & Roy’s breakfast options is Bert & Roy’s Big Boy, with two eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, ‘shrooms’ (don’t fret, this isn’t Phuket), hash brown (again, we’re not in Koh Samui), spinach and toast putting similar Aussie big brekkies to shame. Breakfast down Bondi Road has never been bigger.

Just as popular as the most important meal of the day is that other important meal of the day, lunch, and at bert & Roy’s Bondi cafe and restaurant its lunchtime when the Southeast Asian and Thai chops in the kitchen begin to shine. For under a tenner you can grab a lunch special taking in chargrilled and stir-fried options, curries, noodles and soups. But it’s perhaps the dinner menu, served from 5:30pm until 10pm, that has made Bert & Roy’s names in Sydney. Bondi locals know and love the lavish mixed barbecued seafood share platter, for example, loaded with fresh maritime goodness in a Thai-style.
