The Japanese scene is pretty crowded on Chapel Street, and there sure is no shortage of options, but Hako Sushi may be the most underrated. Unlike newer, more hipster Prahran Japanese joints with big marketing budgets and a loose grasp on proper Japanese food and techniques, Hako Sushi is a legit sushi house in the traditional way. Small and extremely affordable compared to the Melbourne average, Hako Sushi has authentic bento boxes, pungent and abundant miso, super fresh sashimi and a bunch of brown or white rice sushi rolls to choose from, ideal for a quick lunch break but also popular for some casual banter and a good meal of an evening. It’s small and cosy vibe is part of Hako’s allure, but it does mean it fills up quickly, so best book ahead to be safe.
Pretty reasonable value. Maybe it would be better as a taje away because there is no table service and it's not particularly comfortable. Ask them not to put mayonese on everything if you don't like it.
