The Royal Indian Restaurant takes its cues from the ancient culinary traditions of the Mughal Empire, from which the decadent dishes that now characterise Indian cuisine stem, and if you head over to Little Malop Street in the centre of town, you can garner a taste of it for yourself. The menu leans heavily on the tandoor – kebabs, naan breads, tikka meats – and on the classics of the genre. Pick up chicken in korma, vindaloo or tikka masala form, lamb Hyderabadi style or as a rogan josh and fish with potato, as it would be served in Amritsar, or with mustard seeds a la Madras.
