Simple setting, superb food. It sounds too easy to be successful, but Black Ginger have proved otherwise on Enmore Road in Newtown. Their dining area is minimalistic and cosy, letting the food take centre stage – and she pulls out a heckuva performance. Vietnamese food done with a few twists and always with acute attention to detail, Black Ginger is among Sydney’s crew of affordable and accessible but outright delicious Vietnamese restaurants. The serving sizes are generous at Black Ginger and many of their dishes are great for sharing, so bring a group, order up a few things and enjoy a few new tastes, like the chef’s special tamarind duck or Black Ginger’s range of inventive rice paper and vermicelli rolls. Classics are done well, though, so don’t branch too far out from familiar favourites like sang choy bao and steamed prawn dumplings, both of which are done extremely well at Black Ginger.
