The prestigious Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay has at least one of most every type of global cuisine, and for the specific Chinese regional cuisine that comes from Sichuan province, many would say that Flavours Chinese Restaurant is the area’s best representative. Garlicky and spicy – sometimes mind-blowingly spicy – dishes abound on the menu at Flavours’ Sandy Bay Road restaurant, with the heat traditionally delivered by the famous Sichuan chilli pepper. Offering a more nuanced selection than your run-of-the-mill Australian Chinese restaurant, Flavours has dug deep into subregional traditions, with styles from Chongqing, Chengdu, Zigong, and non-meat dishes that stay true to the vegetarian lifestyle practiced by the region’s Buddhists. A busy spot, it’s best to book for lunch or dinner in advance.
Authentic Sichuan food with very friendly service. The fish in oil with chillies is out if this world. Also great string beans. We would certainly recommend this restaurant to any true food lover.
We found the food could not be faulted, and service great. Good value for money. The only negative was that the venue was uncomfortably cold.
Good food, friendly atmosphere, reasonable price for 1 person. Had the black fungus and dan dan noodles, wait was as expected and food was up-to-standard
Good and quick service in a pleasant setting in the heart of Sandy Bay. Unfortunately the food was not very tasty, and served a bit cold (despite only a short wait after ordering).
