Monsoon Thai has hit Battery Point’s dining scene with a whole new wave of ideas. Gone are set distinctions between cuisine types, between classy and casual, between local and global, because this groovy new joint on Hampton Road hops between all of them. Monsoon Thai are, as the name suggests, experts in the subtleties of Thai cuisine, but instead of sticking to tried-and-true Thai staples they use this expertise to come up with a bunch of creative fusion dishes. Notwithstanding their mastery of Thai tastes, Monsoon Thai are proudly Tasmanian, and they champion locally sourced produce as strongly as anyone in Hobart, from freshly hauled seafood to free-range eggs. The menu changes constantly, but among the kind of things to expect are wild Tasmanian honey pork ribs, Paneng flathead and the incomparable rocky road chicken. Run by the same brains as renowned Hobart spot Thai Veggie Hutt, there is a huge range of vegetarian choices as well as plentiful vegan and gluten-free dishes.
