Robbie Marino came from humble Italian immigrant origins in Hobart, and he grew up on the hearty cuisine of the old country. He took over at Harbour Lights Cafe way back in 1997, and the food that they offer is a tribute to his mamma’s cooking all those years ago. That means a full Italian menu – with a few Aussie favourites in to boot as well – that is sure to delight all and sundry that enter through their doors on Morrison Street in central Hobart, just yards from Parliament Square and Salamanca. Book a table now and head on over for a proper family feed.
Hobart is home to plenty of great restaurants, and the Italian community is responsible for a whole heap of them. Robbie Marino – the child of Italian immigrants that came to Australia in the 1950s – carries on this tradition at Harbour Lights Cafe on Morrison Street in the centre of town, directly overlooking the port. They occupy a classically Tasmanian building, and their menu is a multicultural mash of Italian favourites and Australian cafe favourites, with options for those to arrive at breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Early risers will be in for a treat if they choose Harbour Lights Cafe on Morrison Street as the location for their brekkie. Robbie’s big breakfast is as Aussie as it comes, with eggs – fried, scrambled, poached to your liking – on a toasted bagel with bacon, sausage, spinach and hash browns. The lunch and dinner options come with a more Italian twist, whether that be in the form of antipasti to start, pasta or risotto dishes, or, should you make your appearance at Harbour Lights on a Friday or Saturday evening, something from the extensive pizza bar. Central Hobart residents need no introduction to the delights available on Morrison Street, so just follow the crowds and book a table at Harbour Lights Cafe.
The staff were attentive and helpful and the service generally was excellent. The food was fresh, tasty, well presented and reasonable priced. This is my 3rd visit to Harbour Lights Cafe and, so far, the experience was consistently excellent and I will continue to go back.
Easy to book online. Great attention on arrival. Fantastic service at tabke and deliscious breakfasts. We were a tabke of 4 . Had 4 different meals and all were delish.
Staff very friendly and efficient. Our food order was taken quite quickly and drinks arrived promptly. We had to wait awhile for our food to arrive but it was cooked to order so no complaints. The food was very good. The restaurant was very busy which is a good sign.
The staff were friendly and courteous from the moment I walked in. The environment was pleasant and the food was great too! Excellent place for a casual meeting with friends!
I went to Harbour Lights Cafe for dinner. The menu was fantastic and choosing what to have was the toughest part - I settled on one of the specials: a prawn linguini, and I wasn't disappointed. Harbour Lights Cafe is a great spot: excellent service, central location, and delicious food.
we arrived on time and found our table was reserved and waiting for us. The staff were very friendly, well groomed and knew their menu. The food was excellent and generous servings. As requested we were finished and ready to leave by our requested time.
Seriously cannot rate this high enough We had a Google and found this place as we were staying at the wool store. I've NeVER had such fresh produce! The mushrooms were to die for! Customer service was also second to none Thanks!
Brilliant place. Staff were under extreme pressure with numbers and all maintained their composure and friendly nature. Food as always was simply great. Booking for six and accommodating and elderly ladies upstairs was beyond normal service.
Location, view, service and food; all top shelf. We arrived in town Friday afternoon, needing somewhere nice to eat, a quick scan of TA, and chose Harbour Lights. Everything about our dining experience was terrific, thanks.
The food was fantastic, perfect amount of time between entree and mains too. The service was excellent, the waiter was looking after a lot of tables by himself and managed it with ease!
