On Bourke Street in the heart of Melbourne, between Russell Street and Exhibition Street, you can find a Japanese establishment that apes the fabled izakaya bars that dot the streets of Tokyo. Izakaya Hachibeh specialises in sake and skewers, sashimi and sushi, everything you could want to soak up the drink that you’ll surely consume on your evening out in the city centre. Make sure you book a table though, as they can get busy.

Really friendly staff, fast service & amazing food to top it all off! Frequently go here throughout the year, best Japanese food in Melbourne in my opinion!!
Traditional, bonfide Japanese tucker at very good price. You cannot beat the quality and value of the $12 lunch obento! Recommend booking on Thursdays and Fridays, as it can get busy! Especially at this time of year! (Dec)
Izakayah hachibeh never disappoints. The food is delicious and consistently good. The service is wonderful, the ambience is nice and casual and the food is reasonably priced.
This was not my first time there, there is a reason I keep coming back. Good food, good atmosphere, friendly service and reasonabley priced food!
This was our second visit, this time celebrating our wedding anniversary, and while the food was still delicious, the service let it down at bit this time. We were seated upstairs, in a squishy spot around the corner, and had been seated for over 20 minutes with no attention, and eventually had to catch someone's eye to ask for menus. Then we had to ask for water and glasses for our BYO wine. Our meals were ordered as entrees and mains, but were delivered in a quite random order. We received 2 entrees (sharing), and then our mains, and then had to ask where our other 2 entrees were, and they still took another 10 minutes or so. Food is delicious, but sloppy service took the shine off a special anniversary dinner.
Delicious food at Izakaya Hachibeh, together with very friendly service. Prices are very reasonable too. Wine prices are also excellent. Our Japanese visitor was very impressed, and said the food was very authentic. Will definitely be back!
Authentic Japanese izakaya and restaurant, cater for lunch and groups. However, the service was somehow a bit slow as we came in as a big group with last minute booking and looked like they were short of staff at that time. Busy at lunch time, so booking is recommended. The restaurant also has sushi bar on the ground floor.
All 4 dishes my partner and I order - raw octopus with wasabi, grilled Saba, sashimi platter and tori karrage - were excellent. Top quality as I've eaten in Japanese restaurants all over Asia. Ingredients were fresh and pricing was good. Excellent experience. Will be back for sure.
Yummy! Food is always consistent, you can never go wrong with their sake on the special menu. This place is usually busy so it can be hard to get the staff's attention at times but I always enjoy the food each time I'm there.
I ended up needing more tables and chairs the night i booked my reservation and the staff were very accommodating and friendly and did very well looking after us. We were very satisfied. Thank you.
