Rocking the Casbah was once the role of Joe Strummer and Phil Simonon alone, but at Kazbah in Sydney, they are getting well in on the act. They’ve been going since 1998 under head chef and restaurateur Zahi Azzi, and they are only going from strength to strength. Their combination of Mediterranean cuisine, fresh ingredients and great location is clearly a winning one: they offer mezze, kebabs, meat and fish dishes, seafood platters and vegetarian options that represent the finest culinary traditions of Morocco, Lebanon and Turkey. The location is scenic to say the least – they are on the Harbourside in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, with a view of the water, and they couldn’t be easier to get to, with access via the Dulwich Hill Line trams at Pyrmont Bay, the ferry at Harbourside or by foot along the walkway.
Once you make the journey into Darling Harbour and over to Kazbah on the Harbourside, then you’re going to want to bring your biggest appetite. Begin with a mezze selection – the house board includes tabbouleh, octopus, fried kibbeh as well as bread and dips – before moving onto a shish kebab served on a sword or a tagine with roast veggies, chicken or lamb shank. Make sure you book a table if you make a visit though, as Kazbah serve some of the best Middle Eastern food in Sydney and thus can get crowded, especially on weekends and in the summer.
