More about the restaurant: Le Village

Thanks to the tireless efforts of David and Meredith Poirier, it’s no longer just Sydney’s Rozelle and Gladesville residents who are lucky enough to be able to enjoy a taste of French culture and cuisine on their doorsteps. Spurred on by the successes of Le Grande Bouffe and Bistro Meme Restaurant, the duo have teamed up with Harry Bourne to open up another cafe and bistro in a gorgeous sandstone building along Hunters Hill’s Alexandra Street. The emphasis here is slightly different, with a specific offering of southern French and Mediterranean cuisine served either in the immaculate indoor dining space or the sunkissed garden.

Thinking about making a Le Village booking?

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are on the cards at Le Village, in the heart of Sydney’s Hunters Hill. Early risers will be delighted to find Le Village’s Alexandra Street premises keeping pace from 7:30am until just before noon, serving up a selection of freshly baked patisserie alongside big bowls of in-house roasted coffee. Of course, there’s French toasts and continentally-inclined eggs who like a little protein at the break of day. For a really French feed, go for Le Village’s petit dejeuner, pork and fennel sausage, pomme lyonnaise, tomato, mushroom, bacon, sourdough and eggs your style. On sunny days, take lunch in Le Village’s gorgeous garden: heftier fare like croquettes, quiches, parfait and charcuterie, baguettes, burgers and a classic Reuben sandwich, meat and fish dishes plus plenty of fresh salads.

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 6pm sees Le Village opening its doors to the Hunters Hill dinner crowd. Sydney’s fans of French cuisine (or loyal customers to Le Village’s growing family of other French-styled cafes, bistros and restaurants) will be pleased to hear that the kitchen here down Alexandra Street changes the menu every week. But diners can reliably expect doses of southern French and Mediterranean flavours in mains like the simple, delicious tomato risotto with eggplant, basil and pecorino, or the pan-fried fillet of salmon with capsicum and asparagus, doused in a mussel mariniere sauce. The Mediterranean leanings of Le Village really come to the fore when you see items like the lamb navarin with couscous salad keeping company with French classiques like beef cheeks a la bourguignonne and roasted chateaubriand. All in all, Le Village is a coup for the western edge of Sydney city, and a destination for all lovers of casual French (and Mediterranean) dining.
