Those in and around Hawthorn East and Camberwell know Purple Sands well, less for its evocative title but for its reputation for lively yum cha meals and comprehensive menu of classic Chinese cuisine. Standing head and shoulders above many Chinese restaurants in Melbourne, Purple Sands keeps the grease to a minimum and the chefs hard at work turning out dumplings and other delicacies to hungry diners at a rate of knots during peak times. Of course, there’s a lunchtime special where you can get your fill of Mongolian chicken, Hokkien noodles, and Singapore-style vermicelli for rockbottom prices, and chef’s recommendations that include stewed lamb ribs with chu hou sauce and Hainanese slow-cooked pork belly. Found along Camberwell Road near the Rivoli Cinemas, Purple Sands is a top-ranked neighbourhood gem for Chinese food in this part of town. Be sure to book – because it gets busy.
Fantastic food and service. Every dish was intricately made and beyond delicious. The service people were incredibly sweet in accomoadating out needs. 100% recommend for anyone who misses real Cantonese food.
Staff were friendly and efficient. I was particularly pleased with the staff who were so helpful when trying to organise a meal for my child who has a number of severe food allergies.
