The first thing to strike you about this trendy modern Japanese eatery in South Melbourne is the decor: a mix of bright low-hanging lights, sleek furniture, kitschy knick-knacks and floor-to-ceiling windows that hints at the acute eye for presentation you’re about to discover with their food. While honing in on one segment of Japanese cuisine – sushi – nothing about the food at this Clarendon Street secret is restrained. There are countless choices of classic nigiri, inside-out rolls, inari and traditional chirashi sushi, either hand-picked or taken as part of their many combo platters, special sets and party boxes. Seafood is a big feature across the board, but succulent beef and plenty of vegetarian options also abound, and along with a selection of snacks, salads and sides (of course edamame beans and seaweed salad feature), not to mention premium sake, fine wine and Japanese beers, Salon de Sushi offers one of the most complete Japanese eating experiences in South Melbourne.
