The very definition of Nepalese cuisine in Perth’s CBD, Shangrila is as much a heaven on earth as it is a restaurant. Like any restaurant worth its Himalayan rock salt, Shangrila’s approach is to lean healthily on local suppliers – many of them organic – to furnish the fridge with ingredients, and then whip these into high-altitude Nepalese dishes that will take your breath away. Their momo (Indo-Chinese-Nepalese dumplings) alone are worth a booking – if you haven’t tried a ten-some of these, stuffed with marinated chicken, cooked in the chef’s special spice blend and served with tangy chutney, then you’re missing out on a major Australian food trend. From there the sky’s the limit, with robust mountain curries and culinary curiosities that straddle Chinese and Indian traditions from the awe-inspiring Alps of Central Asia. Find Shangrila’s take on authentic Nepalese cuisine on Hay Street in the heart of the city.
The service was good and the venue pleasant. Being an all you could eat buffet there was plenty to eat but the range was limited. There were two chicken dishes (butter chicken and chilli chicken wings), two rices, 1 dahl and 1 spinach. The butter chicken dish was good and I enjoyed the spinach too. Butter chicken isn't my favourite dish and although it was good value I wouldn't rush back.
