Finding an authentic Turkish döner outside of Türkiye can be tricky — too often it’s either too dry, overly greasy, or lacking that signature balance of flavours that makes the dish so comforting. But at Sumac & Onion, the experience is refreshingly different. From the moment you walk in, you can tell this place takes pride in doing things properly — with respect for tradition, but also a flair for freshness and quality. The first thing that hits you is the aroma — that unmistakable mix of slow-roasted meat, warm bread, and the earthy scent of sumac and grilled onions. It immediately transports you to the streets of Istanbul. The setup is clean and inviting, and the staff greet you with genuine warmth — it’s casual, but the service feels personal. You can tell the team behind the counter care about what they’re serving.
Lovely delicious food and good service Thank you so much for everything
I have been here many times and the food never disappoints - definitely worth a visit.
Good food and reasonably priced. Will definitely go back again
Delicious food and excellent service her would certainly go back again
Vine leaves absolutely delicious - we ordered a second round!! All the food was great. Definitely going to make regular visits.
Food was just ok. Not amazing. Service was very average and the restaurant was very cold. They also promote döner night on Wednesdays but there was no döner. Overall a little disappointing given all the great reviews.
From the moment we stepped into Suman & Onion, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality that made us feel immediately at home. Nestled in a cozy location, the restaurant has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that sets the stage for an exceptional dining experience. What really stood out to us, however, was their authentic Turkish Iskender Kebab—a dish that not only satisfied our taste buds but also transported us straight to the heart of Türkiye. The Iskender Kebab was a masterpiece. It arrived beautifully presented, with tender slices of lamb doner served over a bed of lightly toasted Turkish pide bread. The meat was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and grilled just right—soft yet slightly crispy on the edges. The generous topping of hot tomato sauce and a drizzle of sizzling melted butter brought the dish together harmoniously, creating a rich, hearty flavor that was deeply satisfying. On the side, the creamy, cool yogurt complemented the kebab perfectly, cutting through the richness and adding a refreshing contrast. As someone who has had the privilege of tasting Iskender in Türkiye, I can confidently say that Suman & Onion’s version stays true to its roots. It’s rare to find a place that captures the essence of Turkish cuisine so authentically, and this dish was a clear testament to the passion and care the kitchen puts into their food. Beyond the incredible food, the service was just as impressive. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu. They took the time to explain the ingredients and preparation process, which added a thoughtful touch to the overall experience. It’s always nice to see a team that is not only professional but also passionate about what they serve. The ambiance of the restaurant also deserves a mention. It’s tastefully decorated with subtle nods to Turkish culture, creating a warm and pleasant environment that enhances the dining experience. Whether you’re coming in for a casual meal or a special occasion, the space feels both intimate and welcoming. Suman & Onion is a gem for anyone who appreciates authentic Turkish food. Whether you’re already familiar with dishes like Iskender Kebab or you’re trying Turkish cuisine for the first time, this is the kind of place that will leave a lasting impression. We left feeling full, satisfied, and already planning our next visit. Highly recommended for food lovers, travelers missing a taste of Türkiye, and anyone who enjoys hearty, soul-warming meals made with love and tradition.
Greatful to have these guys do the doner in the actual way. Forget about others, go authentic
Great food and lovely service! I will definitely come again.
Great evening - lovely service and great food. The atmosphere was not as good as if it had more clientele but it was a mid-week night. Highly recommend.
Great venue and happy staff, worth visiting, good food and ambience
I’ve tried Turkish food all over Sydney and Wed nights traditional yaprak döner kebab was the best I’ve had. It tasted like I was back in Istanbul Turkey 💯 We’ll be back. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such a refreshing, unassuming restaurant. Superb food, great atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!
It’s usually a good thing when the chef is also the owner as is the case at Sumac and Onion. The food is authentic and delicious and the service friendly and easy. We enjoyed our meal and will be back.

Totally stunning! Hommus so yum i ended up overeating. Good job!
The meal was delicious and the atmosphere conducive to a long night of chatting with friends; that is if Sydney's non-existent night life were more like Turkiye's.
Took a bit of time to get the food but it was worth the wait
