Haven’t been to Zen for 4 months or so. Went tonight for my birthday - and had a great time and great meal. Service was prompt and friendly and the food was up to the usual good standard. It was quieter than usual being a Monday night. Zen is a high quality local Japanese restaurant that I can highly recommend.

Zen is the best Japanese restaurant in Hawthorn - excellent service, great food, great vibe. The food is always of a very high standard. Highly recommended to dine in or for takeaway!

We regularly get take away from Zen, but decided to dine in this time. It didn’t disappoint. Fabulous food…the Sakura set menu was perfect. Couldn’t have been happier. We will be back.

I’ve been to Zen restaurant a few times for dinner and it is always delicious, comfortable and the service is excellent. It’s just such a nice welcoming place. Today was a hot day and it was nice and cool in the aircon.

We all enjoyed a splendid meal. Food and service were of a high standard. Not our first visit and we were not disappointed once again! We will certainly return and bring our friends with us. Only negative was the music was certainly a little loud for comfortable conversation over dinner.

They have a popular 'lunch menu' which has stayed the same for ~20years and that is why people keep coming back.

Generally dishes are very good and this cafe is a local favourite but disappointed with the seafood udon noodles which was bland although the seafood elements were plentiful

Amazing food. We thought we over ordered but it was soooo good that we ate it alllll up! 😆 The service was really great too! Very polite and patient. The food came quickly. I don't think we've had plain steamed rice that yummy before too! The chilli sashimi, charcoal grill sushi platter, sashimi platter, chicken teriyaki, wagyu, seafood Udon were what we had. Every single dish was great. Sashimi was so fresh! Our kids loved them too! The only reason why I didn't put down the best rating is because the toilets are located up a flight of stairs that are slightly steeper than usual. I won't recommend it for older people or those with little kids for this reason. Also the entrance door doesn't shut on its own and we sat near the door where the cold air kept coming in whenever people come and in out and forget to shut the door. There were quite a few food delivery people so it was pretty chilly sitting next to the door and having to get up to shut it on our own every few minutes.
