Founder Chandra Yonzon has a deep connection to Nepal’s legendary Gurkhas. His grandfather, who served in The Brigade of Gurkhas for 27 years, inspired him to name his restaurants after these brave fighters. Melbourne’s city outlet on Flinders Street in the central business district has gained tremendous success for its fresh, unique offerings and commitment to excellence in service. Decorated with Nepalese furnishings, as well as with artifacts like Ghurkas’ weapon of choice, a curved knife called a khukuri, the restaurant provides a unique space to dine with friends.
A meal at Gurkhas Cafe is best begun with an order of momo, Nepalese dumplings filled with a variety of fillings (choose between meat, vegetable, or mixed) and served with a tasty tomato chutney. The restaurant’s main courses are split between vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, with several seafood options. Try the tofuko tarkari made by cooking tofu and vegetables in a soya sauce, or go for the chow seafood, Nepalese fishman’s-style noodles with an assortment of seafood. Like it hot? Then order the chilli beef cooked with capsicum, onion and chillies. Gurkhas Cafe is a local favourite in Melbourne’s central business district, so make sure to book in advance.
