Worst experience ever. The boss refused our request on the 4-sofa seat as we only have 2 people, but offers 2 local customers seat there who came after us (wonder if it's just because we are Asian). When we sat down, the waitress kindly gave us an additional chair to put the bags, but the boss aggressively asked us to return to its original position as the seats are 'fully booked' (though nobody seats there the whole night). He though we took the chair by ourselves, but after being told by the waitress that the chair was actually placed by her, neither he or anyone else in the restarant apologize to us. The beer we ordered was split by waitress about 1/3 but not replaced to a new can. Nobody even gave us a smile during the whole service. Food is not fresh, and there's no air conditioning in summer! Will not come again.

The waiter could not understand English, I have to repeat everything 3 times. The service is very slow. I would never visit this place again!!!

Always good to visit and never fails to serve nice dishes! Good atmosphere and great Japanese beer. Always a pleasure to visit. Had a revised menu today but equally good as before.

Great food, lovely service. Very casual and authentic Japanese food and Japanese experience ! I would highly recommend this place and suggest you ask the chef his recommendations for the best experience.

The food is delicious generally but their sashimi is stand out, such great quality. Lovely staff and a great space, and atmosphere. Drinks menu is great with some really nice sake and Japanese whisky.

The restaurant's service was good, food was excellent and we had a good time to have dinner there. I will recommend my friends go there in the future.

Delicious, carefully made and considered dishes. Felt like I was back in Japan - chilled little bar with nice tunes. Recommend coming here for a relaxed mid week dinner catch up over some delicious whisky

I miss the little origami pieces that were used as chopstick holders, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the service and food (still amazing). Loved the Wagyu Titip Nigiri

The atmosphere at Kagura is fantastic, the staff are friendly and every time I've gone the customers are too, often commenting on plates or whisky selections and asking opinions of the other customers. Kagura truly feels like a Japanese Izakaya and brings back fond memories of my travels in Japan. In true Izakaya fashion it's not huge so even when full it's possible to have a conversation with at your table without having to shout to hear over the other tables and the music selection by Yoshi is always upbeat and varied. Those looking for cheap food and beer are better off down the street at El Loco, if you're after some truly spectacular interpretations of Japanese cuisine paired with one of the best Japanese Whisky collections I've ever seen get down to Kagura now.

Good quiet atmosphere and a fresh french zing to Japanese cuisine. Good selection of Japanese whiskies, sake and wine. A nice hideaway tucked inside Surrey Hills

No what we were expecting, they have a fairly unique menu of absolutely delicious dishes! Plus a really cool atmosphere. We will definitely go back!

Great food and sake. Couldn't fault it. Good value. Only lost points in my rating because of the fit out ... they need to fix the scraping enterance door and tables etc don't do the food justice.

This restaurant was terrible. It was overpriced for what they serve you. The duck was cold, rubbery and overpriced, same with the salmon: overpriced. For the amount paid you expect something more substantial with at least some sides such as vegetables. One oyster cost $4! Four small prawns on sticks was $8! Lesson learned. Will never return to this restaurant. Give me Manmaruya any day!!

Brilliant food, and great service. It was an extremely hot day, and loved the cold towels to freshen up upon arrival. Excellent sake recommendation. Had the omakase - so fresh and tasty. The john dory, especially, was a highlight!

Absolutely amazing Japanese restaurant with unique sashimi platters that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere - sashimi sardines, john dory, treveally, the list goes on. Delicious sake that complements the food! A must visit!

Food was pretty good, fresh and tasty sashimi. Venue was cozy, decent drinks selection. I would say that it was a little on the pricey side for the serving sizes and general casual vibe of everything.

Really relaxed dining not many tables. Great cocktails, a bit different to everywhere else. Try the scallops they are amazing just lightly smokey and perfectly cooked.

great sushi and they were flexible to accomodate for a non raw fish eater..cocktails are inventive and varied as usual, would reccomend for a casual dinner/drinks.

Funky little place with great decor and music. Food came out quickly and was cooked well. Service a little lacking, but there's only 1 server for a little restaurant so makes sense. Ordered the smoked pork belly skewers, cumin chips, chicken kaarage with chilli mayo (must try this!) and the miso poached salmon. Fantastic Japanese Whisky range and selection too.

Absolutely amazing service. Great waiter who attended to all requested. Great alcohol selection. Really good smoked scallopes that I would recommends. Also would recommends the ox tongue. Great little izakaya!!

Fantastic food, amazing cocktails and wine selection, trumped only by the extensive selection of fine Japanese whisky. Cosy spot for a couple of small group. Definitely would recommend.

Good food, good atmosphere/ambience. Drinks were great, prices were reasonably for Surry hills. I would eat here again. Take a smaller group or a date.

As always happens when I visit Kagura, I had some of the best Japanese food available in Sydney, great service and a very enjoyable atmosphere, I'll be back.

Awesome ox tongue skewers, baked mushrooms and squid wrapped in nori sheets and stuffed with salmon sashimi. I thought servings were small for what you pay. Creative drinks selection, good service.

Great ambience and very cool vibe! The guy behind the bar/waiter was very personable. The food was a little different which made it stick out. We enjoyed the whole experience!

Its warm, the staff are friendly, great food and you can get so many types of amazing G&Ts. A great place to chill out with friends or for a night cap.

Service was great. It's Aussie owner made Japanese food. The restaurant itself it's not so Japanese. But the food were not bad.

The ambiance of the pub makes it ideal for a regular neighbourhood joint. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, excellence selection of jazz, novelty izakaya menu, and intimate space. The price is relatively on the high side.

Very poor service by young inexperienced staff. Had to leave after waiting half an hour for some sashimi, the place wasn't even busy. Don't bother with this restaurant.
