Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra, is all about those special, high-end evenings full of fresh, authentic Italian fare. Owned and operated by passionate restaurateur Gino Forlano, Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra is quintessential Italian dining at its very best. The name comes from the simple fact that originally there was indeed only 38 chairs in the restaurant and while this number has increased as the years go by, the same level of intimacy remains. The vibe is relaxed yet vibrant and the menu is designed around fresh, homemade pasta – don’t miss the signature pasta with duck ragout! Located on Bond Street, this Melbourne dining haven fills up very quickly so reservations are essential to avoid disappointment.
Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra was the very beginning of this iconic Melbourne Italian institution and since 2012 has been a must for lovers of good food, company and wine. Inspired by his Italian heritage, Gino Forlano brings la dolce vita in more ways than one to this family-friendly, sophisticated restaurant on Bond Street. You’ll find an array of dishes, mostly centered around fresh, homemade pasta made with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. We love kicking an evening off at Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra with a dozen freshly shucked oysters; caponata di Melanzane oven baked eggplant topped with caciocavallo cheese, Napoli sauce and basil and Il Classico 24-month aged and cured Parma ham served with creamy burrata cheese.
Then, things at Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra get even more interesting. As we mentioned, the duck ragout is a must-try and comes in the form of macaroni topped with slow-cooked duck, porcini mushrooms and shaved pecorino cheese. We also love the gnocchi topped with goat cheese, mushrooms and white truffle oil and the linguine with pea puree, scampi, mussels, clams, scallops, shrimps, garlic and chilli. Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra truly is a slice of Italy in the heart of Melbourne so book a table and head to Bond Street. It’s not possible to be disappointed here. Buon Appetito!
Friendly staff and helpful. The atmosphere was great, good vibe. But if you are looking for quiet place for dinner, you got to find elsewhere. Nevertheless, the Pasta and steak was awesome! Would definitely go back there again
Food was amazing, the meat platter was delicious. Waiters were great. Great atmosphere. Impressive wine list. Front of house lady was a little unfriendly and uninterested.
Everything was delicious and beautiful:excellent food and service plus the staff was very friendly and give us a good presentation of the food. Excellent. Feeling like home❤️I’m from Italy. Don’t miss it
Fantastic experience, lovely service and ambience. Spacious this the renovation. Even got a birthday song sung to me by the staff with my Tiramisu :)
The good: - The food and wine were terrific, and good value - Service was generally good (see below though) - Venue / ambience is good (without being anything special) The not-so-good: - There was a staple on the plate under my bruschetta. I saw nothing to suggest this wasn't just a one-off mistake, but obviously not ideal. - Service completely disappeared later in the evening, as the staff prepared to close for the night. - Credit card surcharges - and on all card types. IMO, credit card surcharges are barely OK at the "best" of times, and definitely not when you're already paying $100+ per person for a meal. A sour note to end the night.
The decor and ambience was great. Service was friendly, but relatively slow give the restaurant wasn't busy. The meals were delicious, although the pasta mains lacked depth in flavour. Other than that, the pasta was cooked to perfection, the entrees were also very good, wine selection was broad and the way they'd designed the wine list was different and easy to read. I will definitely be back!
Dining at 38 chairs is a great experience. The food is amazing and the service is top notch. The only minor criticism is that some of the tables are too close together and you end up bumping elbows with the person at the next table. Don't let that deter you though.
There was an excellent menu with some fine pasta choices. The food, for both my wife an me, was tasty, sufficient and in her words delightful.Wonderful selection of wines and terrific service. Well worth a visit.
Had a nice meal with some great wine and prosecco that complimented what we had. The tiramisu was particularly good with the addition of some chocolate cream. Otherwise, a great place for a smart casual meal that tastes like great quality home food.
Well done to the team. Best Italian food - Nonna Style. Great service and most staff speak Italian. Great location heaps of parking nearby. Modern clean layout inside. Definitely worth the money.
