Extremely disappointing meal after reading in Fodors that HuTong Dumpling Bar has the best dumplings in Melbourne. We were seated in a small, out of sight niche with paint chipped monochrome colored walls. After 15 minutes of no one coming to the table, we finally went and tracked down a waiter. No apology and indifferent service through the meal. The dumplings were okay but we had far better at a very casual little noodle chop nearby the day before. The lemon chicken was heavily breaded, deeply fried and had very little lackluster sauce. Ate less than half of this dry, unpleasant dish. Finally, the restaurant was noisy and decor somewhat tired.

We had the dumplings - food excellent, service great, staff friendly. Our booking was for 8pm and we were on the top floor; so engrossed in our conversations that we didn’t realise everyone else had left! Not hassled in any way to leave. Always a good time for us at HuTong. It wasn’t quiet and it wasn’t overly noisy, just people enjoying themselves.

The overall service was below acceptable standard. The manager (looking guy) was not courteous and very noisy when he set up a table. In addition, he talked to a waitress in a loud voice in Chinese. I don’t know if he was scolding a waitress. Regardless we were uncomfortable. The quality of food was also below average. We have a lot more better quality restaurants in Houston. In any case; we will not return to this restaurant.

Dumplings were fresh and choice of menu was divine. Service was with a smile and very quick. Lovely experience and enjoyed the atmosphere of upstairs dining room.

we had a later lunch reservation on sunday of 1.15 which we didnt feel was late. we were not aware the restaurant closed at 3.00. we were consistently rushed by the staff and one staff was particularly rude and unhelpful. she didnt want to be there. this place had become a regular for us but we will now be taking our business elsewhere

I made a mistake with our booking time. The manager was very blunt and said the restaurant was too busy. I apologise and admitted it was my fault and offered to go elsewhere. He insisted he would find a table and just continued to be rude it was not a great experience and should gone elsewhere considering the circumstances. The meal was just average. With all the other choices of restaurants in this area we would not go back. Disappointed.

Love the place and the food the staff are a little aggressive.

Very nice food but not very nice service. The pressure to order is then ramped but when it’s time to pay, with diners still being served around us we were presented with the bill and the card machine

Food was great as was the service, but is was so loud upstairs was almost like in a nightclub having to tell across the table. Perhaps for larger parties for birthdays might be an idea to place them in a separate area so not to disrupt the rest of the people.

Xiao long Bao was good but the pan fried dumplings were a bit doughy

We have been several before and rated the restaurant 4/5. However whilst the quality of the food remained high, the service has deteriorated significantly, the waiting staff were disinterested, we waited a long time before our order was taken, the staff never once asked if there was anything we needed, we had to catch their attention and ask for a glass of water, ask for a second drink etc.

Literally the best dumplings in Melbourne, great value and BYO. Just remember to book in advance and each setting is only 90mins.
