Even the best Indian restaurants in Sydney can occasionally suffer from a lack of identity – not so with Rangoon Colonial Club on Alexander Street. This Crows Nest stalwart (it’s been around for over 25 years) know exactly who they are: a quality Indian restaurant dedicated to the food, aesthetics and history of the period of the British Raj in India. Most importantly that means a blend of northern and southeast Indian culinary traditions, where sizzling seafood and exotic spices meet the tandoor oven and European techniques. Rangoon Colonial Club’s dedication extends to decor, which is spacious, elegant and green (in terms of foliage, like window boxes that may place you on the terrace of a colonial 19th-century mansion rather than in the heart of Crows Nest’s main eating and drinking strip). Still, it’s royal dhaniya gosht, ajwaini fish curry, lamb cutlets, king-sized tandoori prawns, marinated whole snapper and whatever else you eat that will linger longest in the memory.
