Great mushroom spätzle! Probably the best in Sydney! Veal schnitzel consists of 2 huge well cooked pieces served with rosti. Very satisfying meal! Finished with Apple Strudel served with nice vanilla ice cream and cream anglaise and also Vienna Kaffe. Good service. Will definitely come back!

The waitstaff were nice but we got the one entree we ordered half way through our main meal. definitely not the best german resaurant I have been to and won't go out of my way to go again.

Essen is best German restaurant. We love it! The schnitzels are so generous, Apple strudel is to die for! warm pretzels yuuum...! pork crackling amazing!

Essen is one of our local restaurants and we have dined there quite a few times. The service is always good and the the staff are very friendly. They know their food and can recommend something you are sure to enjoy. The variety of beers are good too.

Great food as always. Attentive staff and wonderful atmosphere. I have been here many times and will continue to come back. Sundays and earlier in the week and best if you don't like it too crowded.

There was a wide variety of interesting dishes on the menu. The traditional German servings of Knuckles, Sauerkraut and red cabbage as well as the authentic German Pretzels for starters were some of the choices. The servings were very generous, the tender schnitzel filled the whole plate. The service and atmosphere was very welcoming.

Good portions of food. Will make me return. Bad smell from toilet / plumbing was a put off but got to sit a fair distance away which helped.

Nice environment , delicious meat platter , want to try everything. Must come again next time. Better to recommence more friends to have a party.

Great German food, the meat were amazing, you can leave your teeth at home as the meat just melts, expensive for a weekday dinner but well with it, I give it 5/5 / you won't leave hungry!

It was still a fun experience. But I was let down as my request I'd written during booking was approved by the restaurant before I'd arrived, and I had booked about a month in advance. The restaurant didn't fulfil my request of a happy birthday song and got the dessert wrong as well.

Don't sit near the loos - eeeegad the smell. We moved and enjoyed our lunch - the food was delicious. Huge serves and now I have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Yeehhaaaa

Excellent service from staff, delicious sausage platter and brezel,pork knuckle was cooking nicely, skin was crispy and but the seasoning on the meat could be better, as my one tasted a little plain. Overall it's a fantastic restaurant for sausage lover and beer lover of course.

Great, authentic atmosphere, efficient, friendly service and delicious, hearty, BIG PORTIONS of Germanic food. Great for groups or a dinner for two. The dutch croquettes, fried camembert, pork knuckle, schnitzels & sausage platters are all delicious!

Good ambience and good eat. No complains. Worth every penny. Went with my partner and had a quality time there. Would recommend highly for beer lovers. Good selections!

I haven't been there for a while. The pork knuckle seemed much bigger than I remembered, maybe pigs these days are getting bigger, not that I'm complaining of course. It was very crispy outside and soft inside, just what a knuckle should be. I'm still not used to the Sauerkraut, due to its sauerness. However, the purple cabbage "Sauerkraut" was not so sour.

Food was great. My friends were happy. It was my friends' first time at that restaurant so and they said they will definitely be back again.

A most enjoyable experience! Very good food and beer - lovely old sandstone building. The wait staff were friendly - my wife said it's the best Pork Knuckle, Spatzli and sauerkraut she's ever had.

Food was fabulous and service was reasonably good. Love the pork belly so much and my wife cannot wait to visit this restaurant again soon in the future

Initial issues with booking; booked online but difficult to confirm as phone line was "crackling " and too much noise in the background Food was absolutely amazing and lovely german waitress Mina was great. We had one of the scoopon vouchers and that was not a problem and very good value for money Beer was great too

excellent food and service. Love the lamb shoulder and pork knuckle. The only thing is to note is that if you bring your own cake, you have to either buy a certain amount of dessert per table or pay 3aud per head for consuming your own cake.

Dish is good but not value wise considering the restaurant is relatively priced. environment is good. stuff are very friendly and nice. credit card machine not working properly so have to pay cash.

Food was excellent just a little hiccup for the service but that was a busy night so it's forgiving. We've been waiting for more than 30 min to get our meal after complaining and found out they actually didn't put our order through. They upgrade my beer from 300ml to 500ml as an apology.

Service was good but food was average. Had the pork belly which could have been more tender. Restaurant ambience was pleasant and had a busy atmosphere.

pleasant atmosphere, service was excellent ,some how it was taken quite sometime for main course almost half an hour waitting but overall we are happy about the restaurant.

The food was delicious especially I enjoyed dessert. But their service was disappointing. There are no waiters to call when you need them. We needed to wait a lot to be taken our order. We asked container for taking away food and the waiter forgot. I could see many customers were stressed because of this. And I see the waiter was very rude to the customers who was asking something. They also ask "Do you want to leave any tips ?" . If customers want and satisfied, they do. Please don't ask. Overall, I was dissapointed.

I used scoopon voucher which entitled me to get about 50% discount. The food was great and fresh. WE received a friendly service. Definitely a good deal.

Skip the commercial theatrical beer cafés and head to the real deal. Great food. Great beer. Walking distance from Sydney central and a lovely walk down.

For a very busy Friday night, the service was outstanding and the food even better. The veal schnitzel was definitely a highlight. We will be back.

Despite showing up 1/2 hour earlier than booked time, restaurant had no problems accommodating. Friendly staff, great European beers and tasty food...especially the perfectly cooked pork knuckle with lots of crackly. If you are into cream brulee you might want to save some room for their giantnormous sized serving of this yummy dessert. We've been to this restaurant a few times and using a scoopon deal did not detract from a great nite out.

Beer was good, food was good. Although it lacked the atmosphere of similar restaurants such as Bavarian Bier Cafe and Lowenbrau. Would recommend the pork Crackling.
